Captain Beefheart, Gary Lucas, Co de Kloet
NPS Radio 6
2008 07 xx
Source: Pre-FM CDR

Lineage: pre-FM->CD->EAC->FLAC
NPS Radio 6--the world premiere of "I Have a Cat", a collaboration
between Gary Lucas and Co de Kloet commissioned by National Dutch
Radio NPS, combining Gary Lucas' original guitar score with the last
lengthy interview with Don Van Vliet (Captain Beefheart) by Co de
Kloet circa 1993. I can't find my original tape of the interview to
confirm the date.

67:23 (aired late July 2008, however this is not from the broadcast)

I decided to leave this as is, hard for me to track an interview. So we have part one and part two. It so subjective. I'm not sure this works for me, but all the same, nice to have.

hey nice! thanks Drew & BP!

From Co de Kloet himself, at http://www.omroep.nl/nps/radio/4FM/captain.html

On July 27th, 1993, NPS Radio producer Co de Kloet had a lenghty conversation by phone with the legendary Don van Vliet a.k.a. Captain Beefheart. They had met each other in person twice. In 1974 when CdK was a young Beefheart/Zappa Freak, and in 1980, when CdK, together with his cohort Menno Kalmann, interviewed Beefheart for VARA Radio. They talked on the phone over a period of years and in 1993 NPS (then NOS) made it possible to create a 4 hour radio show, yes indeed...one of the famous Supplement editions!, completely devoted to the amazing art of Van Vliet. Broadcast date: August 16, 1993.
This show was repeated in a slighly modified version on July 27th 1998, not only on Radio 4 but also via webradio..... yes boys and girls, a global manifestation of Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band. We received a lot of request for tapes of the show, which we will not provide due to legal reasons. For your fast 'n' bulbous entertainment we have taken some pieces from the 93 interview and make it available here. Some of the segments were in the show, some were not.

Thanx a lot Mr. drew, for this Seed. Apart from the 2 released poem-readings(also recorded around that time), where Don speaks in a very weak voice-he who once destroyed microphones with his tone-register- I've never heard anything else from him from a later date.
Denny Walley told me at the ZN 19, he wouldn't answer the phone since about 15 years and that he moved away from the desert
Apart from him suffering from MS, is there anything known about his present state?
I mean, is he still with us?
All the Best & greetings,
Helmut. stoned Peace! Zappacheers!

Thanks much. Great to hear this. Amazing that it has been 15 years since Don's last interview.

Hi, Thanks very much for this Drew51.

It's a real ear opener.

Does anyone at all know where and what DVV is going through ?
1993 seems too long a time not to know any more.
