Fall 75 through Winter 77 is a very underrated year period for FZ guitar - looking forward to digging into this 19 minute Chunga's drool

I'd say it's a very underappreciated period. Mind you critics, like for example Foggy, who don't enjoy this tour don't mind FZ's guitar workouts, finding them fresh as ever. I have to say I always liked this tour, finding it very interesting as a beginning of a longish formative period and an opportunity to compose and develop a range of important, signature compositions, to name just Black Napkins and Zoot Allures. I just love this stripped down band for it showcases an especially creative side of FZ, which is kind of trying to make something out of little, for compared to the greatness of the fall 74, this outfit might seem somewhat wobbly. It's like going back from the electrical to the mechanical age, of simple machines and simple musical means as a way of creating something unique and new, and clearly this band is doing something new, not trying to repeat the 74 repertoire but looking for its own musical space. Interestingly, it's the beginning of the tour rather than the end, the American leg anyway, that is especially interesting. The recent Corsaga proves this, featuring a great 45 minute stretch. Anyhow, you're absolutely right about looking forward to Chunga's Revenge. Chunga is always a highlight in the fall of 1975, and so is Zoot Allures, not played on this particular show, and so are the blues intros and Sleep Dirt (also not here) and more. This Chunga deserves special attention and it is awesome indeed, featuring a great solo by Andre Lewis and then a fabulous seven or so minute FZ's workout with a coda sounding like a crude early version of Ship Ahoy (forward to just past the 16 minute mark). Also this show is an opportunity to hear one of the few 1975 performances of Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up. Great stuff. Thanks for sharing!

It's almost unfair to compare - the fall 74 band had basically been together for two straight years, with at most a month off at a time. Next to that, pretty much any band is gonna sound wobbly or robotic.

This is another Foggy sentiment, one that I'm not so sure I agree with. The beginning is where the rarities are (much like, for instance, 1988), but it's not until the last few shows that the band really starts to come together. The Canadian stretch (which I'm going to assume you're considering part of the "American" leg), with the 30 minute Chunga's from 12/07, is incredible.

Frank plays a very similar motif on the 12/07 Chunga's, and probably elsewhere as well - check the 19:50 mark of the 12/07 Chunga's.
