Frank Zappa
1976 (unknown month/day)
Bayerischer Rundfunk, West Germany
Radio Interview

Here's the first in what will likely be several interview seeds from me and our friends, hoosac92 and Kristoftof.

This German language interview is a bit under thirteen minutes and seems to focus mostly on Zappa as producer, with clips of Wild Man Fischer material (Merry-Go-Round) and what I assume to be Stooges material (a punky cover of 96 Tears, definitely not the Mothers). A treat for unsere Freunde die Deutsches sprechen and, until one of our German-speaking friends can provide a translation (which hopefully will occur soon!), likely a bit of an enigma to the rest of us.

Z_wonders THANX for that old RARITY Exclamation Exclamation Exclamation
As you wished, here's PART 1 of a Translation. I try to stay as close as possible to the text, without any interpretations or changing. Please excuse some possible mistakes, my brain is limited from to much music in it.
The Interviewer (Q) rezites the Interview in indirect speech, with some remarks by himself, inbetween.
Here we go :

Q :"Hallo!"
FZ:"Would you like s.th. to eat?"
Q:"No, thanks. Would you like to do an interview?"
FZ:"Why not."
Q:"Well, we could do some small-talk, (Yaaawn!)."

...and then, a friendly guy with the extensions af a big archive-case (Smothers,I think ed.) enters the room, took a seat & we introduced each other, and started talking about old friends and other things...-

Q:"What happened to Mr van Vliet?"
FZ:"He's got a new band, a very good band. He works in LA. He's producing his stuff by himself, now."
Q:"And what are your plans with your new band? You disbanded the previous one."
FZ:"Yeah, every year."
Q:"Like John Mayall?"
FZ:"No. Not like John Mayall. Some guys stayed in the band, but all in all it's a new band."
I have to do 4 more albums for Warner-Bros. 'til December, & then I'm finished with that company."
Q:"And then?"
FZ:"Then I start with a new company."
Q:"What about Wild Man Fischer? Is he still existing?"
FZ:"He's still there, living in LA, running around with his album underneath his arm and molesting
people...it's so crazy!"
BREAK : MERRY-GO-ROUND by WMF.
Q:(to the Radio-listeners)"OK, that was WMF with M-G-R., and we heard HOT TUNA after that, just for a change. But now, let's go on with the Interview..."

PART 2 is coming in a few hours, after I bought some food and stuff for my family and me.
So long,
Hans-Helmut(unholm) stoned Peace! Zappacheers!

coffee2 Doctor Smart will explain to you stoned
...and on we go...PART 2:
-----
Q:"What's it like in LA these days?"
FZ:"Everybody's so stoned stoned , they're unable to move. I don't care about it, I'm here only a small part of the year, anyway. Most of the time I'm on Tour, all around the world.
I'm much more a Cosmopolitan than a citizen of LA."
Q:"So you play 'WORLD-MUSIC', then?"
FZ:"No, I don't think so. I don't play world-music, I play American Music.
I play for people all over the world, who like to hear that kind of music.
Nobody, I think plays world-music-that doesn't exist."
Q:"There's this Theory, I think Jerry Garcia said, that someday every musician worldwide will be
capable playing together with any other musician there is.
FZ:"Fantasy! Drug-Influenced-Fantasy!
I know too much about the mechanical problems occuring when playing together with other
musicians.
It might be possible, in Theory, that people from who knows where get together and try
something,
but making music with a (deeper) sense is a different matter.

Q:...and because I was interested in that spezific topic, I inquired a little further, as far as my
tiredness allowed me to, why it'd be so difficult with the World-Music...

Q:"What is the reason for all that difficulty, the varied roots?"
FZ:"No. Technical problems.
I can't imagine an indian musician with a bamboo-flute doing a Jam-Session with a Steel-Guitar
Player from Tennessee, with any musical, meaningful result.
It might work as a Cultural-Experiment, but not as Music."
Q:"And what do we learn from that?"
FZ:".....

what's the answer of Frank ???
You will know in a few minutes, same PC, same Site, same Channel...

Be sure to tune in, when it's : PART 3 of FZ's 1976 - Interview..!

So long (aka : So short),
Hans-Helmut (unholm)
stoned Peace! Zappacheers!

sleepy coffee2 crazy Idea
...on to the final, 3rd PART: (Franks answer...)

FZ:"I think, the idea of ONE music for ONE world, would be as boring as the idea of one language for
the whole world.
People need their national identities. It's good, that you are a german, I'm american, s.b. else is
swedish & another one is a Russian. That's a good thing, and it should remain that way.
The problem of most of the governments is, they want to abolish individuality, especially in
socialistic and communistic Ideal-Conceptions.
They want to gather everyone to make them into robots for them to manufacture products
and stuff.
If you have a culture, it's better to love & represent it, in order to keep it alive.
That doesn't mean to hate somebody elses culture, it's just that you have your own one and
you should respect and tolerate the other ones.
It's like, for example : different food. Maybe you don't wanna eat sausages every day, or drink
beer all the time. Probably you want a Taco some time.- It's more fun that way.

BREAK: EDDY & THE HOT RODS - "96 Tears"

Q: Those were the english Punks in charge "EDDY & THE HOT RODS", who hopefully don't
manage to slap it all out of our brains (???,ed.), otherwise I'd cry 96 tears myself, if not
more.
What I then asked Frank, doesn't of course apply to them (he meant EDDY...,ed.)...

Q:"Do you have the feeling, that you will ever come to an 'Endpoint' by technically or stylistic
means, with your music?"
FZ:"No! I still have so many ideas, it'll always be exiting."

Q:...then already another associate, with a probably better prepared Questions-Checklist
appeared, and so for me, there was only time left for one final question...

Q:"Frank, is there anything, you'd like to tell the listeners of 'CLUB 16', who love every spinal-
groove, from the first to the last?"

FZ:".....answers in English (orig.-recording)

Break..
MUSIC : Jelly Roll Morton & his Hot Peppers

The interviewer announces a panel-discussion at 8 pm, that same Thursday evening. Topic was:
The shortening of money for school-subjects like Art, Music...everything of cultural importantance.

At last, he gave a personal statement, about how he looked forward to the FZ-Concert next night*, and he was now reconciled with his last LP (Zoot Allures ?,ed.).
FZ was a molest, lovable and hearty man in Show-Bizz, doing his Best to entertain his audience in an intelligent, ambitious and good way, no more & no less...and that's more than enough.

*probably MUNICH, 14th of February, 1976 (according to BuffaloVoice). So the Radio-Show might have been broadcasted
on February, 13th., 1976.

The End

I hope this is a little help for all non-german-speaking Zappateers.
Best wishes,
so long,
Hans-Helmut (unholm)

stoned Peace! Zappacheers!

Great, the interviewer reading the transcript of his interview.

It should read "das Konzert am Tag d'rauf" = "the concert the following day" dating the interview at February 13th, assuming he's talking about the Munich show justified by his dialect.

Thanks for sharing.

hmm Embarassed You're right, BV. Maybe my surrounding music level was too high again. Smile
I edited my text in that manner. Congrats for having passed my little test,

Thanks for the translation, it's quite the interesting interview, especially the world music stuff. I guess he changed his mind about the compatibility of disparate musical cultures, given the experimental sessions he later conducted with Johnny Guitar Watson, Terry Bozzio, L. Shankar, the Chieftains and the Tuvan throat singers.
