Frank Zappa
The Abnuceals Emuukha Orchestra,
conducted by Michael Zearott

18-Sep 1975
Royce Hall, UCLA
Los Angeles, CA

~~ samples from 2 versions: blackpage and MR-walk ~~

Planning to put up an upgrade to Blackpage's existing seed of this show,
here we have the choice between at least 2 versions:

#1: an upgrade to the existing blackpage seed:
speed corrected (between -20 and -120cts), volume levels and phase offsets adjusted,
re-tracking along the titles shown in setlist below,
tracks named according to our usual seeding standards;

#2: a different sounding version, well worth comparing in parts,
contributed by M.Roach and transferred by walk.

setlist (with tentative track naming) for this show:

01 Intro~The Story Of Bogus Pomp
02 Bogus Pomp
03 Revised Music For Low Budget Symphony Orchestra
04 The Story of Pedro's Dowry
05 Pedro's Dowry
06 The Story Of Rollo
07 Rollo
08 The Birth of Black Napkins
09 Black Napkins (world premiere)
10 Dog Meat
11 Naval Aviation In Art
12 Sink Trap
13 Orchestral Duke Of Prunes
14 Discussing Greggary Peccary
15 Greggary Peccary fragments pt.1 (incl.Steno Pool)
16 Greggary Peccary fragments pt.2 (incl.New Brown Clouds)
17 Strictly Genteel

lineage info:

#1 (from orig.blackpage seed):
Quote:
tape(x gen)->Sound Forge->CDWave->shn
converted August 2004
116:12 total time
sound 6/10, but clear and you know what's going on
the taper was probably near the back of the auditorium

shn->wav->flac(Sector Boundaries aligned FLAC level 8 )
converted 12/23/05
add to this:
flac > wav > Soundforge 5: speed correction, volume level & phase offset adjusted, minor retracking > flac FFE lvl7 w/SBA
converted (by flambay) Dec. 2007

#2 (MR-walk):
Source: 121.02 min, Aud, B/B-
Lineage: AUD > ? > cass(maxellUD90)/? > A/D nakamichi/UA-5 USB > wav Audition 2.0 > DVD > Soundforge 5: speed correction, volume & phase offset adjustments, tracking > Flac FFE lvl7 w/SBA
Taped by: N/A
Contributet by: MR
Transfered by: walk
Edited by: flambay

Samples seeded here (from each version - for handy comparison), taken from:
02 Bogus Pomp
05 Pedro's Dowry (incl. Intro sample)
08 The Birth of Black Napkins
16 Greggary Peccary fragments pt.2
17 Strictly Genteel (ending)

Personal notes on sound quality:
Best sound (B/B+) imho can be heard in first part of the blackpage version (tracks 01-12),
brighter and more musical clarity, also during FZ's talking.
Before 13 Orchestral Duke Of Prunes there is a source change, and the rest of the recording sounds much more muffled (B-/C+ imho),
with lots of volume level fluctuations, especially audible in the Greggary Peccary sample.

MR-walk's version is more consistant sounding throughout, less bright than the first part of blackpage's version, but superior to bp's last part, therefore B/B-.

Unless any other versions are being sampled and discussed additionally,
I for one would go for a combination of the two versions presented here:
tracks 01-12 from blackpage
tracks 13-17 from MR-walk.

Your thoughts, ladies and gentlemen ?

Sorry to say, my 2nd gen is on loan. I'll contact the guy who has it, will take a while, but it might be worth the wait. There's one more I need to get back from him, Hartford 2/16/88, I think.

OK, well I'm going to take my time checking mine. I can catch up on other stuff we did long ago, maybe if nothing new pops up!

With the recent inclusion of bits & pieces from this on OSD (and with a polite nudge from flambay) I gave these a listen... I think, pending any significant upgrade from Jon and/or Drew, that the suggestion above about a mix of these two tapes is the only way to go:

In this case, since they are from the same source, there's nothing to gain from seeding both in their entirety.

Hopefully we can get an update on Jon's quest for the loaned tape sometime after he returns from the wilderness.

Yeah even when back, Jon probably will still not have it back. Let me check my copy quickly. At least do a quick compare and report results here. Darn I don't seem to have this sample. I'll grab again...

Ok, I like both of these more then my copy. My copy is close to Walk's, but I think the Walk version is better.

Sure - I retrieved the discs earlier this year, ripped them and sent the files to a significant Zappateer, who's been terribly busy with other great projects. It should see the light of day eventually.
