The producer of the A&E/BBC Biography posted some comments about the making of the Biography show. A friend asked him about the footage that i think starts the special. Maybe it is B&W? It's not this, but it is German according to the producer. I'm still not sure where that footage comes from? It looks awesome, and I sure would like to see the whole thing. It's not the usual suspects. It was unknown footage to my group of collectors. Footage appears to me to be in the mid-70's.
Sorry a distraction, this being from Germany reminded me of this lost footage...
Thanks for this. I suspect this is much better then my copy, and I only have the Zappa part. Wow awesome group of musicians. Too bad it's not the actual festival. I would love to see McLaughlin in 68. He was doing some neat stuff at that time. I have one commercial LP from this time, very nice stuff. His work with Miles is great too, wow. I recently purchased the 74 Mahavishnu DVD. Damn, I need more of that!

That's as much as I know so far, maybe someone can review what's actually on it for us.

If you mean the B&W footage with Jimmy Carl Black wearing a T-shirt which says "The Indian Of The Group" and FZ wearing the same kind of trousers he wore in Berlin, 1968, I think it is also from 1968, somewhere in Europe but, as far as I know, it remains unidentified.

Can someone have a real look at this and post a summary of what is the zappa content?
I'd like to update the catalogue with this too (the next global update is planned for the next week-end), but, really, I don't have the time to watch it.
For what I guess, this should contain a live Mothers performance of In The Sky as stated in the catalogue

note: unknown gen (replaces an older rip of the same tape: 1968 09 28 Essen Germany 15.49 FM (WIU2B) reseeded by LudzNL 2006-09-02 Q&C Approved) - a short video of In The Sky, also from Essen, is available on a video called Internationale Essener Songtage 1968, not present on the tracker
source note: this is the source for the Electric Aunt Jemima BTB version

I'd like to have confirm of this, or of anything else this may contain.

Thank you very much

Now that I've had a quick chance to see some of this, here's what I found:

1. Video starts abruptly (a snippet is most likely missing) early in the footage of the Berlin riot that's seen in the A&E Biography (where the album version of Holiday in Berlin is overdubbed and zappa appears to be directing along with the overdub...). That footage runs for a while before...

2. The title sequence appears, black background with white letters, up comes "Schone Poesie Ist Krampf". At this point I realize I've had the Steef version of this video for a long time (which claims to be from February of 1989) but his version (7:48 ) appears to be cut back to just the Zappa portions. It's posted here: http://www.zappateers.com/bb/viewtopic.php?p=93642

I watched this after I finished the DAD download. The show starts out with the Berlin riot footage that has been shown other places. There is a short interview segment (taken from the original Essener Songtage documentary) but it's difficult to hear what FZ is saying because of the German language overdub. You can hear the opening notes of "In The Sky" but then it cuts to something else and the song is not featured here. It goes on to feature a more contemporary interview with Zappa (88/89 perhaps) giving his recollections of the festival. There is also a criminally short excerpt from "Pound For A Brown" with the MOI playing live. This is what lead me to speculate that the clip at the beginning of the A&E/BBC special was culled from the footage from this festival. The clothing and camerawork are similar enough to make think it's possible.

I think if you boiled down the FZ portions of this program, you would have a little less than ten minutes total footage.

Thanks for uploading the "In The Sky" clip. I have this on shitty VHS someplace and never watched it much because it was so bad. I tried to digitize it and the resolution was so bad, all I got where ugly horizontal lines across the screen.

I'm afraid not. In the BBC Late Show Frank wear a white skirt, while here is in black...
