I'd love to hear that with Shepp and Philly Joe Jones...
but to clarify, I asked Joe about the existence of a Roland Kirk tape which he said he had not found in the vault.

In the book Necessity Is Dick Kunc mentions that he got a sudden call from FZ to go on the road with the Mothers which led to the "briefcase tapes" FZ mentioned a few times, and which make up much of WRMF and the first disc of YCDTOSA 5.

This seems to have started with the Miami Beach gigs on Feb 7 and 8 1969. The Boston gig with Kirk was the last known gig before that (Jan 31 1969) so it may be that Kunc just missed it.

As for an audience recording, I wouldn't hold my breath, but there were a few 60's tapes that have just come to light in the last few years.

The other gig with Kirk was in Miami in June 69. Except for The Ark (and the bus/backstage stuff on YCDTOSA 5), nothing seems to have been released from the MOI shows in the U.S. and Canada after March 69. I don't know if the shows weren't taped in releasable quality, or if they were and FZ didn't like them.

Either would be something to hear.
Roland Kirk & FZ, Archie Shepp & FZ. Both sound like must hears if they exist.

I'm still surprised that there aren't more live collaborations, especially with the original Mothers.
Given FZ's early embrace of freeform & the fact that the MOI played several Jazz festivals, you would have thought it was a made in heaven opportunity for FZ to have special guests onstage.

Perhaps The Mothers were still seen as a "Rock Group" ?

FZ with Roland Kirk. FZ with Archie Shepp. FZ with Jimi.
They release FZ with Mr Sting !

He did release a performance with Archie Shepp, although in 1984.

I always thought any good enough performance with Kirk would've been included by FZ in the Stage series also.

What's the big deal about Kirk anyway? hmm
Laughing

Roland Kirk like Frank sees everything as an instrument. He did a very cool video short with John Cage about sound, sound as music. It reminds me so much of Frank's idea. Roland could play two or more instruments well at once. Not a novelity, a very awesome event to behold. He could do the circular breathing. He was blind. Really a visual performance is where you can see he is a master of sound. As far as performance if anybody reads the actual review of the show, the guy is blown away by Kirk and the MOI performance. Read the article posted with this thread. So no chance of anything mediocre here. I do have footage of Roland Kirk playing with Eric Clapton. I myself must admit I'm a huge Roland Kirk fan. I love his spontanious nature, and it is reflected in the music.

In the video posted a few days ago on zappa.com Joe mentioned that from 1972 on FZ taped almost every show. For shows before that I suspect it is less certain that FZ taped them.

You we all cannot like everybody. A few very good artists never appealed to me, and no matter what, i just cannot get into them. So no worries, Kirk is an aquired taste like many artists, and sometimes it tastes bitter to some.
