Late Show

The late show from Santa Cruz is definitely a cut above the early show. Even if it's not up to the standards of later shows from the tour, there's still good times to be had. Sound quality is a bit more muffled than the Drew 1st gen, but still quite listenable. We get a delicious Black Napkins - short, but to the point - a nice Easy Meat (dig that heavy metal outro), the second recorded performance of the Sinister > Stevie medley, and the 1981 band's first known attempt at the Society Pages medley - not to mention what may well be the debut dubbing of Mr. Thunes as "Nektor" (the name of his flanger, if memory serves me correctly), which becomes a secret word of sorts late in the show. No bona-fide monster songs - those wouldn't appear until Halloween - but, hey, eight guitar solos is twice as many as the early show, so!

One beaucratic note and two trivial asides:

Beaucratic note: I did not include grner's original text file in the early show download. I have rectified that omission in this here download - hopefully it's not too bizarre to figure that anyone who grabbed the early show will grab the late show as well. There was only one text file for both shows.

Trivial aside the first: This, along with the early show, was the first .FLAC file I ever downloaded. Off USENET, no less. Fear not, the spectrum and checksums match those of a known-reputable copy!

Trivial aside the second: This is one of only two "FZ-approved" venues I myself have ever been in (the other being the Warner Theatre). It's basically a large box with (if my memory is to be trusted) bleacher seating, much like one would find in a high school gymnasium. Of course, the one show I caught at the Civic Auditorium was Primus, and a thin haze of smoke clouded my vision as a bitter-sweet smell filled my nostrils and no doubt impaired both my memory and my judgement. So who knows for sure.

Please explain "Zappa approved venues". I think this is the only time he ever appeared here.

I bet that after seeing FZs bodyguard bust a taper during the early show, Grner1 became more cautious with the handheld mics and that is the reason the quality is less good
for the late show. I moved to a different spot for the late show.

He also played the Civic Center in July 1984.

Perhaps "Zappa-sponsored" or "Zappa-enabled" would be putting it better? "Venue that Zappa played at" is so... wordy.

To my ears, grner's early and late show both sound pretty similar. RA's version of the late show is by far the best of the four recordings I've heard thus far.

Thanks to everybody! It is always nice to nail a show so well as we have with this one. Always nice to have someone who was there to fill in the details and such. I wish all the shows we had people comment like this. Regular show or exceptional, the comments made this one much more enjoyable.

Agreed. I find this stuff totally fascinating.

One thing I would like to see more of is photos from the actual shows shared. In some cases we've got them, but very few and far between. Even the ZFT doesn't always include proper period photos. The people who snapped pics at concerts probably aren't the same people who collect recordings though I suppose.
