Been enjoying this release. Thanks Joe!! What’s next? har har. No, but really.

I guess the 1970 Record Plant stuff has to come out before the end of the year...there’s that.
Im hoping for another surprise left field release too before 2021. Whatever it is I’ll be buying!

Finally received it today. First listen, just finished disc #3. So far I liked it very much, more elaborate comments will follow.

I have a Question about the Hybrid Concert:

Is there an easy way to tell which songs or portions of songs are from each show?

Thanks!

Santa Monica Auditorium 08-21-70
Coliseum, Spokane, WA 09-17-70

Here's a good clue: the use of wind instruments! If you listen to the Santa Monica Auditorium show on the tracker you will notice that a) King Kong has no saxophone solo and b) George has not begun playing the trombone live yet. But the trombone is definitely there on the last couple of songs on Disc 3 and the saxophone is present on King Kong. Also, "Trouble Every Day" seems to be unique to Spokane. "Road Ladies" doesn't have the organ introduction on the Santa Monica show on the tracker. But it's there on the version released.

From first listen I think I can pick up from which source the tracks come from. As you know, there is a recording of the Santa Monica show circulating and it matches the beginning of the tape plus aside from "Trouble Every Day" being known to have been performed only on Spokane, they sing "this is the swinginest place in Spokane Washington" in "What Kind of Girl?". Also, while similar in tonality, the two shows sound a bit different: Santa Monica has clearer sound, more present vocals, narrower stereo image balanced towards the right channel and distant audience while Spokane has more distant sound, less audible vocals, wider soundstage and the audience is more present.

So in my opinion this is how it goes:

1. "Welcome To El Monte Legion Stadium!"- Santa Monica
2. Agon - Santa Monica
3. Call Any Vegetable - Santa Monica
4. Pound For A Brown - Santa Monica
5. Sleeping In A Jar - Santa Monica
6. Sharleena - Santa Monica
7. The Air - Santa Monica, switches to Spokane at "won't you please hear my plea"
8. Dog Breath - Spokane
9. Mother People - Spokane
10. You Didn’t Try To Call Me - Spokane, switches to Santa Monica after the first verse
11. King Kong Pt. I - Santa Monica, switches to Spokane at the start of the keyboard solo
12. Igor’s Boogie - Spokane
13. King Kong Pt. II - Spokane
14. "Eat It Yourself…" - Spokane
15. Trouble Every Day - Spokane
16. "A Series Of Musical Episodes" - Spokane
17. Road Ladies - Spokane
18. "The Holiday Inn Motel Chain" - Spokane
19. What Will This Morning Bring Me This Evening? - Spokane
20. What Kind Of Girl Do You Think We Are? - Spokane

cheers

I was thinking about possibly patching some parts of Disk 3 with parts of our tracker versions.
But obviously that doesn't seem possible.

I think if Joe had realized that this would work, he would have done it for this project at least.

Finally received my copy today! It was awaiting me on the front porch. Having only listened to discs 1 and 4 so far... I can definitely say this is AWESOME. Great collection. Solid jams.

I think there are two inserts from Spokane in there, at 0:04 and 0:25. I agree with the rest of the list.

just finished Disc 1 and here's my thoughts:

Red Tubular Lighter (groovy)
Lola Steponsky (blecch)
Trident Chatter (it's...chatter)
Sharleena (interesting)
Item 1 (eh)
Wonderful Wino 1 (it's nice to hear pre-Rainbow Theater FZ sing it, but of course Jeff's version remains the definitive one)
'Enormous Cadenza' (like being a fly on the wall)
Envelopes (interesting, but it sure had a LONG way to go)
Red Tubular Lighter unedited (has its lengths, but FZ just slays)
Wonderful Wino inst (now YOU can sing and solo on this track)
Giraffe (it's much more enjoyable than the terrible vocal version 'Lola Steponsky', but it's clear why this remained in the can; some nice instrumental interplay though)
Wonderful Wino 2 (very close to the first version, but longer and with a much better solo IMO; fuzzbox heaven)

I did like this disc, honest, but not much made it to record for a reason.

The most disappointing aspect about Lola/Giraffe is that they don't touch the final sections of the piece as performed on the San Antonio concert or on Adam Minkoff's instrumental recreation thereof on his Unimaginary Diseases EP. Which is my favourite bit of the whole thing BTW! But the instrumental version goes off into some interesting tangents, including the quotation of Integrales by one certain Edgard Varese (also cropping up here and there on the Contempo '70 gig).

I would say it’s more than a quotation of Intégrales by Varèse. They riff on some of themes for quite awhile, jumping between that and the Giraffe melody starting at around the 5:20 mark. Amazing stuff.

So considering King Kong on the hybrid concert disc is definitely from Spokane, it's interesting they kept the E-flat dorian mode going for solos as recently as that! So I guess the switch over to the D dorian mode must've occurred some time between Spokane and I think September 25 which I think is the earliest show on the tracker with the D dorian mode for solos.

If you told me my new favorite Aynsley Dunbar performance was gonna be a live version of “Would You Go All the way” I wouldn’t have believed you. This set is chock full of amazing gems and brimming w joy. Bravo, Joe!
