John Zorn - Calculus (featuring Trevor Dunn from the mighty Mr Bungle).

In other news - Mr Bungle are touring and recording again so it's not all bad news.

Can - Sacrilege

That's the remix album, and I'm familiar only with "Vitamin C" and "Halleluwah". That's because they have a similar groove which I'll show one drum students of mine today. I know he's into remixing and electronically assembling groovebased tracks, and so those remixes might be door-openers for him to the real deal: The original Can tracks (which I'll give him too).

Apart from that I actually like the "Vitamin C"-remix! I think the right adjective would be: trippy!

That's an awesome lesson. And incidentally probably the best two tracks on that compilation. I was excited to discover it, and I love the idea of people remixing Can, but found the whole set to be shallower than I imagined it would be. Still, its enjoyable and I did buy it.

Jaki Liebezeit continues to astonish me, one of rock's hugely underrated drummers, although clearly not undervalued by the minds inside Can. Maybe I'll crank some Can today while cooking!

I'm listening to Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony play Hovhaness' Magic Mountain today. I love the fugue-ish section in the middle, and all the delicious tonalities.

He didn't seem to be particularly impressed though. In the past I also played him Zappa a few times, and he didn't like all that "xylophone". Rolling Eyes
Man, it's tough to get across the qualities of those early groundbreaking bands to today's teenagers.

If there's nobody in their family regularly playing certain things, they hardly will open up for music they don't know.

DISC TWO (69:12)
1-Kiss That Frog
2-Washing Of The Water
3-Love To Be Loved

Recording comments (from The Movement: www.genesis-movement.org/php/listtour.php?tourid=35):

One of the best audience recordings ever made. Almost sounds as good as a soundboard.

Worth getting for the very rare performance of Love to Be Loved and the not too often played Only Us.

David Rhodes is introduced as "Happy Hooker" [Jesper Moonen]

Turned out really nice. A must have have for the (only?) captured live version of "Only Us". A little more "in your face-ness" or a bit more bottom end would have been great but overall this is an 'A'. [guam10]

I downloaded nearly 40 single tracks from ca. 10 shows from Sonic Youth's bandcamp website. All live stuff, soundboard quality, and I picked mostly the songs Kim Gordon sings (spanning 1990 to 2011). Wonderful offer/find in theory, but what I heard so far is not really good. It's like... you find all your favorite songs from a band live in excellent soundquality and it doesn't click. They nail that material much better in the studio I'd say. Also Kim Gordon sometimes goes a bit over the top, looses her cool at the mic, sings some more relaxed songs a fifth or so higher on stage, just ruins a couple of songs (I'm usually a big big fan of her shaky fragile singing!)
