to add more: I cannot recommend more the book on the impulse! label for a feel on "free" jazz and whatnot.

Is that the book The House That Trane Built?

Yes. By Ashley Khan. Wonderful book. On top of the excellent reportage, the design is a joy and makes it even
more fun to engage. I learned a heck of a lot about "the biz."

Question to the English native speakers: I was always wondering whether the "Free" in Ornette Coleman's "Free Jazz" is an adjective or an imperative. Any thoughts/insights?

Ornette never specified what he meant by the title, but since he praises the "freedom" of the performance in the liner notes, I think he meant "free" as an adjective.

Definitely what pbuzby said. On a side note... for a version with the imperative, there's this thing: https://f4.bcbits.com/img/0004401266_10.jpg (Mats Gustafsson).

There's an anecdote... maybe from O. Coleman, that in the earliy days of that style, some people were irritated because they were supposed to pay admission for a "free jazz concert".
