That would have been boring.

I always liked the playing of the 88 band. Listening to Heavy Duty Judy from TBYNHIYL brings back memories of me and my dad laughing our asses off to this song.
What a sound, what a solo and what a cool "hello".

I got into Zappa by Broadway the hard way. I consider the 3 three 88 Albums as great albums.
The best thing with Zappa is that he changed directions that is what it keeps it interesting for me.

Best Band's Heavy Duty is definitively a highlight, too rarely spoken about track in the Zappa canon. Sheer power, a heck of an opener...

You mean, if only FZ had stuck to doing the same thing for 15 years? Phew, I'm glad he didn't.

Yes. Although I will say, the '73 "Dickie's" blows away the '88 version. Even Keneally thought so when he heard the old version on the YCDTOSA sampler during the '88 tour.

it also sticks out as much less relevant than the other songs on Broadway.

Gotta admit that when this was first announced I thought it might be Roxy band overkill but that
notion is officially dismissed. A super-fabulous release and a new archival fave as I really didn't
know I needed it so bad. I was never a huge Dickie's Such... fan but something about it here makes it
stand out as a highlight. I think wingedeel got me to pay more attention to it, too.
Listened to Show 2 last night and again first thing in the morning. Yowza!

For me the 88 band should be compared to ZINY, it's the same kind of band.

You certainly have a point here, cosmikd. As for me, the 88 band never displayed (or was used to display) its full potential. The ZINY band came much closer.

no I didn't mean that. What I meant was the feel and sound... these musicians were much better players in my opinion and Frank had more energy and creativity at this time in my opinion. I found the 88 band live and on record rather dull and used to sit in the concerts waiting for Frank to solo and those solos weren't as good as in the past. But if you prefer th 88 band thats fine with me

Similar instrumentation but different era, different assets and shortcomings, I'm glad to have both.

I totally agree, but that's no surprise since the Roxy band is my favorite of all of FZ's bands. Still, I wouldn't want any other band to sound like it, and it's one of the reasons why I usually hate cover bands.

Why do you mention that?
Your FLACs are just the compressed versions of your WAVs.
The music content ist the same and both are lossless.

You are perfectly right of course, and FLAC can easily be converted into WAV.
I meant that the FLAC version is kept on harddisk for archiving, and the WAV files were used for some retracking and merging in order to get the 2 cd sets that I wanted for each show.

Btw, I like these Chicago performances maybe even better than the Roxy run - or is it blasphemic to make such a statement?

I've read other people saying it. Roxy is more polished and better recorded, Chicago maybe has more fire and grit.

I got the Highlights disc now and think I really have more than enough material from that period now.
