I love this album don't get me wrong but the audio is terrible and I've never read a good explanation for it.

Does anybody here know why the quality on this album is so bad?

Thank you

Depends on what version you have.
The 2012 remaster is ok in my ears.

Talking about the Barking Pumpkin 1981 release and the same on the Ryko 1990 release

I think it was mastered too fast, and too compressed. The arrangements are already very dense, so that tends to make the album very likely to cause ear fatigue

This issue is so badly mastered that it can be considered as defective...

I've thankfully never had to listen to the supposed bad versions of YAWYI, but I've heard the horror stories. I guess one advantage of being a younger Zappa fan is how easy it is to get all the albums in good quality these days.

I can see how YAWYI might end up sounding less that optimal, though. Honestly, I find the second side kind of hard to listen to now that I've heard the Crush All Boxes mix of those tracks, even on the excellent 2012 release. I wonder if there's still good "slow" mixes of the album's tracks in the vault? It would be pretty sweet for the album to get a 40th anniversary release or something.

The first time I heard Sheik, Tinseltown and YAWYI was when I bought the Ryko CDs in 1990. Played them many, many times over the next few years and just was excited enough by the music that I didn't notice the audio problems. I replaced them with "good" versions later but have not heard those nearly as often.

I like the music and production of YAWYI. Would have loved to have an album of dense instrumentals like Sinister Footwear in that production style. I don't care for most of the lyrics - they seem largely prejudiced and inconsequential. Dumb All Over is good, as is Heavenly Bank Account and Teenage Wind. The low budget sociology elsewhere is too crass for my taste - which leaves a stale aftertaste.

It's my favorite FZ album, and has been since I bought it on vinyl when it was first released.

I hated when I first got the CD and the solo in Dumb All Over was edited out.
When I got the Spence Chrislu version with the solo restored all was right with the universe again.

For what it's worth my EMI CD release has a few more measures of the solo before it fades out than my original release vinyl copy.

I somehow avoided the bad CDs first time round even though the majority of my first experiences were with the Rykos. Sheik and Tinsel I had on used used vinyl and made nice dubs to chrome cassette. YAWYI I had a imported “remastered”
double cassette from EMI.

Never bought the bad YAWYI cds in early 90s (only LSO and DHBIM). Did get the EMI cd which was fine. Never heard the latest YAWYI releases by ZFT. I'm happy with the original vinyl and the EMI cd. imslow
