I was listening to the Zappa tracks I have put on the laptop, just because they were there. I went on to Weasel as it was the next album after the one I picked earlier, on the alphabetical list. I was typing something on Facebook (my kids and others and some hobbies are there) and all of a sudden Orange County Lumbertruck came on. I stopped typing.

Though it's short (LP era, a lot of major things were short), it is still a killer track. I played it three times. Goes to confirm my often repeated thought: Zappa had it right the first time.

Now I have an actual question. Where is the longer piece of live tape this is extracted from? I know the date and the personnel and played the YCDTOSA 1 version.

OK, Ulrich had it as London Oct 25, 68 as all after 1:21.

It's perfect, with the little bit of grout at end. It blends with any other piece of grout you might find. Going on to the next track...I move my headphones off the ears a bit for obvious reasons.

I don't have any Zappa trinkets, but I saw this and seriously considered it for carrying my migraine pill plus a couple of ibuprofen around.

I also looked at this

but then I remembered Dweezil's comments on Zappa merchandise his siblings wanted to peddle. I won't go any more into that trap than maybe a T shirt if I ever get to Dweezil's own concert. If he is allowed to sell anything.

That is all in the past. I think you will find ZFT products at Dweezil gigs and possibly Dweezil merch at the ZFT Bizzarre shows in the future.

As for all the tat with a zappa image for sale, none of it will be ZFT authorised unless you actually see the official logo and copyright, and even those will be faked sometimes.
Phone covers... there are plenty of vendors on line that let you upload your own images to use, your favourite album cover (or poodle) for example.

No! Don't say it, it may give people ideas... The last thing I want to see (apart from a 5-hour video lecture of Tony Blair explaining brexit) is a ''Poodle phone cover'' thread....

I can't wait for my genuine Thermos brand Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention lunchbox! Or a cheap knockoff.

I understand that Frank sort of abhorred commercialism purely for the sake of profit, and it sucks if people are ripping his family off by selling unauthorized merch, but I feel like this stuff needs to be made today because A) it keeps factory workers somewhere employed, and B) it keeps Frank's name and likeness out there. Not too far in the future, everyone who ever met him will be dead, so anything to capture the interest of a younger audience is good IMO. It's like watching a movie based on history. Sure, nothing in the film makes sense and it hardly even tries for historical accuracy, but the curious types will keep digging for the real story, you know what I mean? You wouldn't believe all the stuff I've learned from listening to Frank's music, not to mention other cultural touchstones like Monty Python.

As for track of the day, today it was Greggery Peccary (from the Studio Tan album, which among other Zappa albums I listened to while driving for work). I can't say anything about it that hasn't been said already. It's just fucking brilliant. Speaking of LPs and short tracks, I always wondered how long GP would have been if Frank hadn't been constrained by the prevailing LP format. I feel like he had to chop an awful lot out to make it fit onto an album side.

What's the matter? Don't you like the sound of a well-maintained pipe organ being played by a highly skilled professional?

OK, thanks for all the info. But, the idea was that you list a song. You can even link a favorite live version on Youtube.

I've only got limited recordings (4) but today's song du jour (note double use of today!...why didn't I think of it yesterday?) is Carolina Hard-Core Ecstacy. Back in the day the song came out the phrase "hard core" was not in wide use. Most people knew it as a porn term.

I can't say it was ever improved after Bongo Fury as far as the band performance goes (solos differ in various versions). Extra points for taking a stab at the "rumpled paper sack" lines:
And got right down there on the tile floor
Now Darling STOMP ALL OVER ME! . . .

A random sample version (YCDTOSA 4)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKZ-E80QeMs

I've always had some trouble listening to Bongo Fury beginning to end. Somehow I lose interest or skip to Muffin Man. My project of the moment is to explore it track by track. As far as live material goes I only have one live CDR of Zappa and Beefheart. So,really, never gave that much consideration. Someday I will find some Zapapa Beefheart gem I have missed before. Ned The Mumbler is the best one so far.

Well, I said Greggery Peccary was my track yesterday, if you're talking to me. I really only like the Studio Tan / Lather version. Everyone else who's performed it since Frank died has messed up the music and doesn't know how to interpret the lyrics and narration properly. I guess they didn't watch enough American TV from the '50s and '60s.

As to Bongo Fury, Advance Romance is a great tune, obviously. Napoleon is the singer I most identify this song with. He's the only one who pronounces tired as "tie-red", which I enjoy. But I do really enjoy the little addons that Frank stuck in, in later versions. In fact, I like it when cover bands recognize the good bits of all the different versions of a song and hybridize them into one cohesive arrangement.

No not you, no criticism of you Mick. I just donít have much to comment on Greggary. I found that Studio Tan and Orchestral favorites are both short so I put them together on a disc. I have listened to the lyrics but not carefully. So it was only recently I noted Billy The Mountain in there. I canít say Ensemble Modern improved it, but itís tolerable. Itís not a piece that is easy to tackle, so a good effort. It may be improved yet, as a wind ensemble piece. Itís just that recordings are crap income these days unless you can promote a tour.

Well I'm no expert like some people here but I don't think the live versions of GP that Frank performed - where there were no such constraints - were any longer. (although I believe he never performed it in its entirety live - I find it difficult to tell because bits of it are played under different titles)
I think the album version contains the entire thing in six scenes, viz;
'Greggery's Apartment'
'The Steno Pool At Big Swifty's'
'Greggery Invents The Calendar'
'Greggery Is Attacked'
'The New Brown Clouds' and
'The Philostopher Speaks'

Ned the Mumbler the best? Have you ever given 'Willie the Pimp' a go?

I don't know about that... most people I've known that have worked in factories have been paid just enough to keep them miserable... They don't usually do the environment many favours either...

A new attempt. The track of the day is Absolutely Free
http://globalia.net/donlope/fz/lyrics/We're_Only_In_It_For_The_Money.html#Absolutely

Notes
http://www.arf.ru/Notes/Woiftm/afree.html

I donít know exactly how to describe it, but the contents and arrangement perfectly describe all the hippie shit going on, distilled to some records that we played in our teenage rooms.

A bit of that hippie shit and music was for me the first major US album by Soft Machine. Also its follower that had some Zappa style long tracks of small bits stuck together.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volume_Two_(The_Soft_Machine_album)
Oops: see main entry https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soft_Machine

And the personal bit here is that I had my first apartment and attempted to cook. Anyway I bought groceries. I managed to get a couple of books of green stamps (see arf above). I bought that second album with them.

Absolutely is of course tied to Flower Punk, an all time favorite of mine.
