Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention
1973 11 06 (Early show)
Hofstra University
Hempstead, NY

We are pleased to present this fall 1973 show back to the tracker after a long time being absent. Too long in my opinion. This is the same Yojimbo source presented years ago here. But the original version was moved to "bad sources" for Yojimbo's statement that some sort of EQ'ing & de-hissing had been done. Since no other copies have surfaced since then, we decided to re-transfer Yojimbo's copy and present it here, again, this time without any EQ or de-hiss work.

It should be mentioned that this copy comes from a traded CDR, reportedly from a master clone. That is how Yojimbo presented it originally so I have done the same here but I have not been able to confirm the lineage since his original seed. FZ Shows lists two versions- a short and a long one. This is the "long" version. However, the two versions are from the same master. The better rating given to the "short" version (B+ versus B/C+ for the "long" version) I believe was an oversight. The master was recorded at a high level and suffers from over saturation and distortion which naturally is present in both versions. When you crank them both up, they sound pretty much the same.

So, why the "short" version in circulation? In my opinion this was due to some severe volume fluctuations on the tape which Yojimbo likened to mic problems. These fluctuations get worse on the second side of the tape and get very severe about midway through "Big Swifty" and are down right nasty in "Dickie's Such An Asshole". Somewhere along the trades lines, these sections were eliminated creating the "short" version which also conveniently fit on a single CDR.

At any rate, we have here the complete version of the only source know for this show (minus a couple of tape flip/cuts). Flambay did a nice job smoothing out the volume fluctuations although the encore preamble and first verses of "Dickie's" were too bad to completely correct. Despite this, I find this show very listenable and it is also a great Fall 1973 performance with a receptive college audience. Funky versions of "Pygmy" and "Penguin In Bondage" (including the curious insertion of "Kung Fu" before the guitar solo in a short lived arrangement) are highlights as are extended improvisations during "Don't You Ever Wash That Thing?" and "Big Swifty" (including some audience participation). - Overnitefreak

Thanks a lot!

Everything in the universe is . . . is . . . is made of one element, which is a note, a single note. Atoms are really vibrations, you know, which are extensions of THE BIG NOTE, everything's one note

I have a short version on cdr which is only 71 mins. Probably got this in a cdr trade many years ago.
My personal subjective rating is B/B- for the sound, but pretty good performance ( hey, this is the Roxy band, man).
Thanks for this version
