The fact that I'm taking care of this particular concert shows how much deranged I am. Really, working on it was not an easy task because sound quality was mediocre to begin with and all that we had were fragments of the show that had to be combined together. Understandably, this is not a well circulated show but for a long time all that was available to collectors was a tape with the first hour of the show. Sound quality is rather poor and distorted. The equipment used to record the original tape was obviously not top notch and I bet the venue hadn't good acoustics to begin with. To make things worse, the cassette was probably not in good conditions too because the stereo image was completely fucked up with the channels being unbalanced, even though it was obviously recorded in mono. I experimented a bit with this and found out that only using one the channels makes the listening experience less dire: interestingly, the channel that looked worse (with peaks going over the top) was the one that sounded clearer and less distorted. I occasionally patched in the other because the less messed up channel had some mechanical tape noises, see if you can find where I did that. The tape cuts out during the "Outside Now" solo with the volume gradually increasing until it cuts off: it is my opinion that the machine used to record this show was low on batteries and, instead of decreasing the tape speed, it affected the volume recordings. Since I wanted to hear more of the solo, I did an edit where I increased the volume: unfortunately, as the recording levels get lower, the sound deteriorates and since it was poor to begin with, not everyone will appreciate it, so I also included an unfixed version in a subfolder. Parts of this source sound slightly better but near the end it gets really distorted and there are bits on "Outside Now" which really really do suffer from this. There were some glitches on "The Blue Light" and "Cosmik Debris" which I managed to mostly correct, except for a small one at the end of the former. Nothing better has surfaced since 2005 so this will have to do for now.

Something *did* surface in 2010 though, namely a second source that sounds clear and a lot better, shared by Canadian Zappateer Aranciata, who personally taped it. The bad news is that almost all of the original cassette was accidentally erased and all that survive nowadays are two fragments from the end of the show. The good news is that these fragments do not overlap with the first source so at least we have 12 more minutes from the show that we previously didn't have. This fragment has languished in the Shoebox since then and has now properly taken care of and put it where it belongs. Aranciata remembers copying the original Master Cassette before it got erased to a Reel to Reel but that too appears to be lost. Let's hope that one of his friends kept a copy and that we will be able to have a better representation of this show someday. Again, I reduced all of it to true mono for better results (and to save space), except for some small bits where it was best to leave it as it was.

By the way, how's the show itself? Unfortunately, what he have now doesn't provide us much. Due to the regulations of the venue they were playing in, the band is forced to take a break after 30 minutes, something Frank mocks before the intermission so the first half of the set is more of a warm up than anything. The bit after the intermission is a bit better but unfortunately the tape ends where things get interesting. Frank's solos on "Chunga's Revenge", "Black Napkins" and "Outside Now" are all pretty good. The latter is probably the best effort of the three but unfortunately it suffers from the sound problems mentioned above and it's incomplete so the enjoyment is spoiled a bit. The "Black Napkins" solo is also quite inspired though and shows Frank experimenting with what sounds like a voltage filter: think a bit of "Ship Ahoy" on SUNPYGSM. The better sounding source, unfortunately, offers a trucated version of the monster song of the tour ("The Torture Never Stops") and one frustratingly short and uninspired solo on "The Illinois Enema Bandit": it's obvious that the band is in a hurry (union problems?) since the band noticeably speeds up the tempo near the end and Frank has likely some technical problems too judging from the tone of his guitar. Too bad! So, as you can see, at this moment, this is a pretty much a completists only item but I'm sure there are many among us and I certainly am one of them. Plus, this mess needed to be adressed and the show presented on the tracker in a version that made some sense sooner or later, so why not doing it today?

Thanks to the unknown taper!
Thanks to Aranciata for sharing the surviving fragments of source #2!
Thanks to CheepnisAroma for collecting source #1!
Thanks to LudzNL for seeding it!
Thanks to Frank2441 for rescuing the files of the original seed of source #1!
Thanks to Flambay for speed correcting both sources!

Enjoy !!

I forgot about this one G so thanks for revisiting and spiffing it up a bit. The longer source was a tough listen back in the day so I'll look forward to checking out your efforts.

Kind regards,

I was on my first North American tour, on a day off in Montreal sitting in my hotel room listening to the radio when out of the blue there was a phone interview with FZ, basically promoting this show. Not sure now whether it was for the next day (which meant it clashed with our (Steve Hackett) show) or a bit later but either way I couldn't attend. But this brings back memories of happy days for me, so thank you very much.

Thank you Galeans, and to all involved for the current best version of this 1980 Montreal concert.

I always thought the Forum had really good acoustics even with it being a hockey rink. Obviously the sound depended on where you were sitting and the bands setup. Comparatively with other venues I've been to around the world, the Forum was really a magical place.

Quite a few tunes missing and a compromised sound, but I'm pleased something has survived.
