ABSOLUTELY FREE TRACK LISTING

I think this is the closest we'll ever see to an Absolutely Free P/O, so I'm glad it's coming out Very Happy

cheers

Too bad the Vaultmeister isn't lurking, or he could comment about a P/O ... He's on the road with EJ !!

Helloooooo there!
As you know we have been steadily, over the past ten years or so, re-issuing Frank's catalog in the vinyl format. We painstakingly spend time on details to try to make them the best they can be. With Absolutely Free turning 50 this year, it was an obvious choice to prioritize it for 2017! But we figured, why not make the package special instead of just making the original album available? So, we came up with this. Yes, some of this material has been issued before, but not on vinyl. There isn't that many things we could do for a P/O-style extravagant package, so we tried to make this fun and special since it was going to be a vinyl re-issue anyway. Hope you enjoy it!

Thank you Joe for everything that you are doing.
AF is one of my favourites and definitively one of those convincing me Frank was a genius (IMHO in '67 Brown Shoes went a bit further out than Sgt. Pepper Smile ).
Too bad there's not much to add in the "extravaganza package" but thanks anyway for creating this wonderful gift for the fans.

Agreed on all points, although there's no reason to diss Sgt. Pepper (unless you're the village idiot). Zappa was by definition more radical than The Beatles - that was his niche. But a song like A Day In The Life is about as groundbreaking as you could get in 1967, and a fantastic track. Brown Shoes went further, but there are so many acts that have topped that too. Keiji Haino is just one example - his solo debut Watashi Dake? will be out on vinyl again in mid-June, mastered by Bernie Grundman. Brown Shoes Don't Make It is conservative by Haino's standards, but of course still great - and there's room for all.

The Beatles's thing was songwriting and top sounding top produced imaginative records. Had they been as far out as Brown Shoes, they wouldn't have sold that many albums.

What Brian Wilson did on his own around that time was pretty crazy too:

BTW, I have a vinyl-rip of the rare original US mono LP -
and it sounds absolute fabulous, compared to the stereo version.

Mono is always better. I learned that from the very first Floyd LP with Syd. I always wear my "back to mono" pin on RSD - I think it was Phil Spector who said that... Either a release should be a knock down drag out surround sound, a real head trip, or it should be in mono. Having said that, I always loved the "bass on the left, guitar on the right" thing from the 70's. Or at least that's the way I heard it...

It isn't hard to find a mono copy of AF, if that's what you need --

Shocked at how cheap these are priced... I must have confused it with an old Miles Davis press !

THIS!

I never play my Stereo FO and AF LPs anymore. I always go right to the MONO versions.

I received this yesterday. Cat. nr. on label is V-5013, on front cover it is V/V6-5013 X. - Same papersheet as used on the stereo copy I have, only it is folded to hide the word STEREO from the front cover (although it's there of course, at the bottom extreme left of the gatefold). Blue label V-5013 (stereo V6-5013) - apart from the number, the only important difference from V6-5013 label is that the word STEREO is left out. The word MONO nowhere to be seen on cover or label. - I checked Invocation from the two Verve albums - and the difference between the mono and stereo versions is obvious, since the two lead instruments are channel-separated in the stereo. Haven't had time to listen to the rest, yet.

And by the way - watch the Nazi run your COUNTRY!
