Another show from (almost) the same era as the last one that needed rework. First of all, we have determined that the 60 min duration on FZShows is probably a typo and there are no circulating versions of this with "Cosmik Debris". Of course, we always want to be proven wrong in these cases, so if you have a version of this show with that track and that duration… you know what to do! Second, sound quality: although this is not one of the finest sounding tapes around, the C- grading is definitely way too low. The music is intelligible and so is most of Frank's banter and, as the tape progresses, the sound improves and actually becomes almost decent near the end. Not only that, but we have also been able to improve Yojimbo's original cassette tape, which was already a slight upgrade to the previous seed by itself: the ever-reliable Flambay speed corrected it, adjusted volume levels and phase offset and manually removed most of the clicks. I have removed some more (a couple of others were impossible to deal with and have been left untouched), eliminated some hiccups and overlaps and, most importantly, decided to reduce most of the recording into mono in order to delete some annoying channel issues - it was a one-channel recording anyway. I'm very pleased with the results and I was almost tempted to give this a B-/C+ rating, but then I've decided that maybe it's a bit too much: C+ is probably honest and correct. Only a few seconds of "T'Mershi Duween" were present on Yojimbo's cassette, so a speed corrected and manually declicked version of the track as it appeared on the previous seed was used.

So, this is a tape that has an overall not great sound and quite a bit of cuts: is there any particular reason to get this? Hell yes, there is! The band is really on fire tonight! If the first part of the recording is frustrating due to the cuts, the section that starts with "Don't You Ever Wash That Thing?" is one of the best musical extravaganzas of this tour. The improvisation "Music for Broken Drum and Stella Artois", named this way by FZ himself, is especially noteworthy: it starts avant-garde but soon becomes beautiful with some great guitar playing by FZ. "Montana" is also very good because it contains extended soloing by Duke, Ponty and Fowler before Frank takes the lead and delivers a wonderful solo that releases all the tension. "T'Mershi Duween" is probably the world premiere and it's very slightly different than usual. Frank is also in a good mood and there are funny remarks here and there, like the continuing Stella Artois references and the pointing out of the band mistakes during "Brown Shoes Don't Make It". So, yeah, in spite of it all, if you are a fan of this tour, this tape may be of interest to you. Oh, one thing to note is that, at the beginning of the show, FZ introduces a few more songs that aren't present in this recording: "Kung Fu", "Penguin in Bondage", "Dog Meat" and "RDNZL", which were played after " The Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue".

Credits:

I remember the discussion we had when we did the CA version of this show for a TDK session way back when:

DLHotch: "Thanks to Stella Artois, whoever she is..."

Thanks to you for completing the material!

You left out half of the musicians!

Stella Artois: vibraphone
Gale Storm: bongos
Joan Vark: timpani
Suzy Cohen: gong
Wendell Corey: cowbells
E. Power Biggs (sometimes Korla Pandit): Hammond organ
Milton Babbitt: synthesizer

Also, Tom Fowler apparently played both bass and trombone in this concert. I wonder where Bruce was.

Interesting that some of these upgrades have missing parts from the previous lower sound quality versions. Omissions that occur during dub lines I guess. Makes you wonder if the master or low gen version will ever make an appearance.

Either way, glad to have this upgrade and nice work on getting it up so fast! tunes

Kind regards,

Does this mean we now have every known 'Ponty' show on the tracker? (FZ Shows)

Well, a couple of seeds may need fixes (nothing too important, though, it seems) but, yes, it looks like all the circulating material is currently available!

cheers

Thank you. I originally passed this up due to the sound quality rating. I am glad that I read the entire text above. I have to hear that Don't You Ever Wash - Montana section. This is one of my top favorite tours. I am seeing Jean-Luc Ponty live in one week in SF. He will be playing his 1970's (and '80's) "Atlantic Years". In the mid-Seventies Ponty had Tom Fowler in the band. I was friends with Tom for a while when he lived here in Humboldt County. What an idea for a song: The Humboldt County Lumber Truck Laughing
