What scares me is reading that synopsis,I don't remember any of it,though I read the book. That's because, probably,I was reading it while smoking.....stuff.
I do remember buying the book, however, which was very stressful.
There were two copies on auction on eBay.One in Canada and one in Australia. The end times of each were only a few minutes apart.I was trying to switch between Canadian and Aussie dollars and GBP in my head, while trying to stay within my budget, but really,I had no idea how much I was bidding for this Holy Book Of Zappalore.
I didn't win the first one,and was poring with sweat trying to work out how much I was offering for the second, all the time determined to bag a copy.
'IwannawannawannaThemOrUs,TheeeemOrUs.....'
Success!!!!
I think it was the Australian one I won,and it was amazing to actually hold a copy in my hands, after twenty years of searching.I can't remember how much I paid for it,but it's certainly the most expensive book I ever bought.
And five or so years later, they reprint it.
I guess in the new year,I'll have to dig it out of the vault and read it again.Straight.

Of course, Frank actually asked Terry Gilliam.[/quote]

It's funny you should mention that. I was thinking the other day that Gilliam would be the perfect one to direct a Zappa biopic.

It's a bunch of screenplays (Hunchentoot, Dwell, Billy The Mountain, Thing-Fish, Francesco, etc.) worked into one extra-long screenplay.

I just picked up, what I believe to be an original copy/pressing, this weekend. I've gotten through the Francesco part, which is great by the way, and onto the Joe's Garage part.

My understanding is Joe's Garage was conceived as a "Rock Opera" however did Frank entertain thought of turning it into a play at a later time? I've always loved the liner notes and feel that you get a better understanding of the songs if you have read them.

On the subject of Terry Gilliam and Dwell, I wrote this for T'Mershi Duween in 1999:

In case ya missed it, Pauline Butcher Bird review on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/Them-Us-Frank-Zappa/dp/1905177569/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1494175468&sr=1-1&keywords=zappa+the+or+us

More back-and-forth in the comments section.

"If you're a Frank Zappa fan and want to delve into the unfettered imagination of this unique man, then this film script is for you.
For me, it is hard to believe that Frank self-published this book in the early 1980s with one eye on running for president in a few years. Who would vote for him when his opponents exposed sections from its endless obscene and pornographic pages, pages that jump from one unconnected scene to another. It's like a row of beads strung together with the thinnest of string and no indication of where it's going. There is no dramatic structure and although Frank must have found it very amusing to write, for the reader, it is interminably dull.
You would think that Frank viewed women as nothing more than sex objects with different contraptions beings shoved in various orifices, albeit vicariously with the use of plastic dolls. And yet when I, a woman, worked for him, he treated me with the utmost respect and encouraged my ambition to be a writer like no other man before or since.
And so I have to admit to being confused - disgusted by what I read and finding it hard to square this dark side of Frank with the kind, intelligent, rational man I knew, albeit twenty years earlier. Pamela Zarubica, alias Suzy Creamcheese, has a line on Uncle Meat on the track, "Our Bizarre Relationship" when she accuses Elmer Valentine, owner of the Whisky A Go Go, of being jealous of Frank. "He never could get over the amount of groupie status you had, and he didn't - possibly because he was fifty years old and wretched." This made Frank laugh out loud, but sadly, her comment could so easily have applied to Frank who, in his forties, wrote this script."

Ouch Pauline!

Anyway...I had a copy once that I ordered from Barfko. No idea what happened to it. Maybe lent it to a friend....

Pauline's comments are valuable, because they show important differences between Zappa the man and Zappa the moustache - meaning public/artistic persona.

Trying to remember...I don't think he talked about running for president until later in the 80's after the PMRC hearings, but maybe he did.

In her book, Pauline says that even during her time working for FZ (1968-72) he thought he stood a realistic chance of becoming President.
