Was “Phydeaux III” really the name of FZ’s touring bus? Anyone knows?

I saw a touring bus with the name Phydeaux III printed on the side, parked outside
the Robinson Auditorium in Little Rock, Arkansas on July 6, 1974.

If I had a digital camera or cell phone in those days...

"Buddy Jones:
Oh...you were the girl
stuck to seat 38 *Phydeaux III...*
why don't you..."

Arrow The real name of FZ tour bus. Check out _Stink-Foot_ entry in Apostrophe N&C.

I think Phydeaux was the name of Frank's tour bus(es) for a number of years. The first time I saw him (Portland OR Paramount, probably sometime in 1976) the tour bus behind the hall was painted to look just like a Greyhound bus, but the word "Greyhound" that normally occupies the entire side of the bus was replaced with "Phydeaux" (same lettering style), and the sleek greyhound logo picture was replaced with a dorky-looking, crosseyed dog saying "Arf!". I don't know whether Phydeaux 3 refers to the third incarnation of the bus, or the third in the fleet that may have been in existence by the time of JG. Tour busses I've seen at subsequent tours didn't have the FZ graphics, but I guess the name stuck.

In the cityscape on the back cover of the Absolutely Free lp
is a sign showing a dog collar and the caption 'BUY A FYDO
fits swell'.

From PUPP E. DOG <puppedog@delphi.com>:

The Band's Buses, on one of their West Coast tours were
labeled ``Phideaux One'',``Phideaux Two'', etc. Phideaux =
Fido, as in Doggy! This is part of a running gag which con-
cerned Frank's road Manager's (don't remember his name) sup-
posed *love* of dogs. See Y.C.D.T.O.S.A.#1, Babbette for
more on this.

As several people pointed out Phideaux Three is the bus Mary
was on (Joe's Garage). Fido is also mentioned in the various
'Stinkfoot' versions, while poodles get mention in 'The
Poodle Lecture' (Y.C.D.T.O.S.A. #6) and the various 'Dirty
Love's. Note also, the *many* barking dog effects in his
work.

The obvious conclusion: Frank likes dogs. Well hey, dogs
like Frank too!

I remember US ski champ Bode Miller telling he used a former Frank Zappa tour bus as a mobile home. No details.

I did this years ago, but can't remember why I did it ... I don't remember if it's something I came up with or a composite or just something I redrew since this is all I could find.

I saw a documentary about Phillip Glass recently where he said his group travelled in the 70's on a former Mothers tour bus.

found this info :
On the Road

For entourage transportation, Dylan rented Frank Zappa's bus, aptly named Phydeaux (Fido). The tour began on Halloween 1975 in Plymouth, Massachusetts, then swung across New England and Canada, finally ending at Madison Square Garden on December 8.

also:
Black Sabbath did not use tour buses in the early days, these luxury coaches did not appear until the late 1970's. The first one I saw was Frank Zappa's bus at a festival in Tampa Florida 1976. Even this was just a converted Greyhound Bus. The bus Ozzy used on the first ever tour was hired from Florida Coach, it was well kitted out and was coach painted with a western scene and had Bald Eagles painted all over. The crew had a similar bus. I have photos of these two buses. They were both Eagle U.S.A. manufactured coaches if that helps. They built the first ever buses we had on that first US tour. Frank did a great job, in my estimation, of describing and deglamorizing the groupie ideal in the song "Crew Slut". He even takes it down a notch by making Mary a 2nd rate groupie who can't even make it onto the main bus with the band and is reduced to traveling with and servicing the road crew who may or may not introduce her to Warren at some point in the tour.

I always get a chuckle when Larry entices Mary by saying "See the World" and then later in the song he mentions "Well you been to Alabama, girl 'N Georgia too".

The thought of traveling through the hot & humid deep south and eventually getting dropped off in Miami on a early/mid 70's era tour bus with one bathroom, more then likely sporadic air conditioning and cheap faux leather seats does not sound like fun or glamorous. He hammers home the point in Wet T-Shirt Night with "You were the girl stuck to seat 38 on Phydeaux III"

I'd like to think the song was written from experience whether it was Franks or someone else.

Fantastic photo. Thanks for sharing.

I seem to remember a bus called something like the Leather Lung? Perhaps used by Missing Persons? Anyone know what I'm thinking of?

Funny, my first memory of seeing Zappa live is one of his rented buses.
By the 1980 Spring tour all the Phydeaux's must of been long gone. My first Zappa show was that year at Lehigh University in PA.
We arrived just before the concert started after a long trip from New York.
The parking lot was full so we had to drive toward the back and I'll never forget seeing this huge new shiny top of the line tour bus with
a beautiful yet cheesy mural of galloping stallions.
I'm sure this was a major upgrade from Phydeaux III.
