My first attempt in Remastering this SBD recording ...
One original and one remastered sample of "13 The Torture Never Stops Medley"
An area were the original buzz is very much audible - luckily it's only in the right channel.
It's a weard combination of buzz, 50 Hz mains hum and various hum frequencies from
150 Hz to 10150 Hz in steps of 100 Hz.
The left channel is unchanged, except for eliminating a 50 Hz mains hum.
From a suggestion by TOGFIADO:

I'll bet a fiver that some bootlegging scumbag releases this with "92.4" in the title.
Thanks to all concerned for the restoration work. Just wondering if the same technique could
be applied to the '88 Stockholm SBD I contributed on those parts where the buzz (from the
dodgy twin xlr/minijack adapter we made?) is audible? Not the part in Lonesome Cowboy Burt
where it goes severely tits up, obviously, but where it's a bit annoying in the background.
It would be nice to have a clean copy. |
A Zappy New Year 2017 to all.

Definitely better than the original, since the hum removal hasn't gotten much in the way of the other frequencies and it still sounds natural.
However, I wonder if it can be furtherly improved: maybe it's just me, but the stereo image sounds a bit different now, leaning towards the left channel. I don't know if it's just an illusion caused by the hum removal.

Thanks for listening!
Yes you've heard right. After the buzz removal of the right channel, there is nearly just
the musical portion left. The buzz itself took a large amount of the original signal.
So, the unaltered "good" left channel is more prominent now and has more punch. I'm still
experimenting how to compensate this difference. It's not like: "Hey, let's remove the buzz
and that's it - job done".
Anyway, the RMS level of both channels were matched and phase shift was corrected,
but as described it still sounds not right. _________________ "The (Zappa) universe ist nowhere to start!" ~ Frank Zappa

sounds awesome Pittylabelle ! I can't wait for the complete thing... I'm kind of sad that besides the Barecelona 88 broadcast source (and if you collect all the aaaaarfnananana birthday bundle iTunes (thus lossy) + the last Zappa President CD for a few 1988 SBD live material) we don't have not much of 1988 SBD material, which is really sad because it seems that Frank Zappa loved this tour/band configuration (if we count all the official albums which covered the 1988 tour ("Let's Make Some Jazz Noise Here" being my favorite, and I like so much Sting's Murder by Numbers and Stolen Moments (so beautiful!) on "...Broadway")...
I remember a 1976 stunning audience show which have been remastered/remixed in the past (one of these shows with Bianca on vocals which makes Pink/Black Napkins sounding like a kind of Great Gig In The Sky)

You're thinking of Boston, October 24th (early show). _________________ ''Just consider this..... You can be scared when it gets too real...''

that's the one! the quality of this audience was already stunning. This was the best recording until they released another show with Bianca officially. But I still love both.

There's still room for improvement - "the final product" will be much better.
The remastering team is working on this now - stay tuned. _________________ "The (Zappa) universe ist nowhere to start!" ~ Frank Zappa

Hi guys,
it has turned out that my technical strategy, to eliminate this kind of buzz, does not work
on a big part of this recording.
The area that I used for the above test/example has the buzz on the right channel only,
and in a form that is barely relative easy to eliminate. The big part has the buzz on both
channels and unfortunate compounded with the amount of good material.
Sorry, but nothing will come of it in the next future - but I'll keep trying! _________________ "The (Zappa) universe ist nowhere to start!" ~ Frank Zappa
