Third set looks like it's from Apr-May '74 tour. Not a whole lot of photography from that brief era. I dig the first set too, which has got to be from the Euro '73 considering a pic of Ian on bass clarinet.

Both are good sets, yes.

Second set is the slightly more familiar photo session of the short-lived early summer 74 lineup w/Jeff Simmons, and fourth set has a few onstage photos of the Andre Lewis band.

George: I bought a copy of Down Beat so I could carry it around and look like I knew what was happening. (See the last photo.)

What's going on in the eighth photo (with the guy in the bird head)? The guitarist doesn't look like either FZ or Jeff Simmons.

I'd say that's definitely FZ with his hair tied up. As for what's going with the bird head guy..... I've no idea....

FOB. Smile

That's Jean-Luc Ponty covering his own face on the cover of the August 16, 1973 issue of Down Beat.

I also think it's FZ with his ponytail. I'd bet the guy with the bird head is Don Preston.

I think the fourth set belongs to 1976.

There is a photo of FZ holding a Finnish magazine named Suosikki

http://www.afka.net/Mags/Suosikki.htm

So maybe he was in Helsinki (Feb. 26, 1976) when they performed there. There is another nice picture of FZ seated and playing his Strat with the same clothes.

The photographer Armando Gallo, was a journalist correspondent in London of the Italian Ciao 2001 magazine ( though FZ didnīt performed in UK inī76):

Back to the first set of photos dated in 1973:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/FRANK-ZAPPA-1970s-Lot-Of-55-Color-Slides-/351434407428?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item51d31f7e04

Though only we may see 12 of 55 slides, in one of them, it appears FZ with a black t-shirt. ( So itīs a different photo session than the band line-up with the mixing board above) and probably a rehearsal, as appears also Ruth Underwood on marimba with diferent clothes as well, and George Duke on keyboards.

Well, if we see this other picture by Ginny Winn of FZ with the same black t-shirt and holding his SG ( though not very reliable dated in 1974) that itīs placed at FZ studio in LA.

My theory itīs that this unknown footage: http://globalia.net/donlope/fz/videography/1981-84.html#Sounds doesnīt belong to a concert in Europe, but it comes from this rehearsal at FZ studio in LA just before touring on August 18, 1973 in Copenhagen.

There is at least three cameras who film it, well produced. No evidence of audience. The clothes of the band members are very similar to the both photo sessions by Ginny Winn though reddish due to the red spotlights in the footage.

And at last, at about 2:08 of the first except of this clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twZJTsJP09U we may see this photo below of FZ almost with the same angle and white wall and wooden door behind him as appears again here :

Well spotted! I did have a suspicion the '73 set might come from pre-Europe rehearsals. But it also appears that the unidentified footage also comes from pre-tour rehearsals. So I guess it's safe to pin this video clip of "Penguin in Bondage" and "Join the March and Eat My Starch" as July-Aug '73 in LA.

I have received confirmation by Tan Mitsugu; thank you Exclamation, that at least the live performance photos belong to LA on December 31, 1975; according to the FZīs radio interview transcription that appeared in the Japanese 1976 tour book.

Excellent observations. The Duke line about Down Beat is classic.

Well the 1973 slides went for strong money. I bid on them twice and each time was forced to bid well beyond the next suggested bid. So, the seller must have set a high reserve or someone placed a very large "sealed" bid to keep others out.

Anyway...

This seems very plausible. Perhaps this was part of a series of filmed sessions/concerts FZ kept re-visiting for a specific project - '73 rehearsal, Roxy performances, "Cheepnis" session, abandoned June '74 Discreet special, etc. I wonder if FZ had a TV special in mind when filming all of the above, eventually scheduling and settling on using the August 27, 1974 footage/recordings for the final product - "A Token of His Extreme".

If it's from a rehearsal filmed by FZ, that would explain how both Italian TV and Australian TV got the footage. It has always been a puzzle how Australian TV got a hold of ten-year-old Italian TV footage.
