I attended a concert from the first ZPZ show. I was mid second row and didnt want to "create a scene" by leaving in the middle of the concert. Dont get me wrong, good musicians but the rest, I thought it was a mistake.

I now listened to several boots of the 2013-2014 tour. I am saddened!

This kids who dont know Zappa's (Frank of course) music and were infants in the 70s, would not get the references and jokes (the words from your lips "I am not a crook" - how many do they recall this?).
The older fans probably know Roxy and Elsewhere by heart and listening to the jokes that you know are going to come, is no fun at all!

Zappa's shows were HIS, they were spontaneous, funny, improvised on the spot. And you could feel that every minute.

Dweezil's shows are Going to see Lenin's mummy. Why doesnt he want to take that band and do their own music, I dont get it. The "paying tribute to my father" thing doesnt pay much. No one could say that for sure but if Frank listened to this, he would turn in his grave. Nice gesture but musically, tragic results. And Frank WAS about the MUSIC.

I think Zappateers pay more tribute to Frank's music than the ZPZ shows. They promote, they bring music and videos to people who didnt attend all those shows.

Dweezil: my guitar wants to kill your mamma! (and you)

This is a well trodden debate. I don't think anybody disagrees with you but ZPZ is what it is. Its not Frank and it never will be. But they play his music and that's not a bad thing. For me, I am happy they exist rather than not and then I have a choice. If they didn't exist, I wouldn't. My advice is if you lower your expectations, you could probably enjoy the technical musicianship quite a lot. And this is still Frank's compositions - they stand on their own. Never mind the inside jokes, that was for the original band. One thing I won't criticise DZ for is his dedication and the level of detail gone into with Frank's music which certainly makes it better than a lot of garage bands out there playing his music who fudge it. Just my 2 cents. imslow

I would be happy enough (and I'm not alone) if ZPZ came to Kiev and performed a concert - the only chance for Ukrainian fans to hear the FZ's music live... Just my 2 cents Smile

I don't like ZpZ, but one thing I recognised and kinda appreciate is that they play FZ-pieces that the guy himself hardly or never played live. Sometimes I download one or a few of those tracks and give it a try. But I always end up deleting them again. Sad

Well, it probably still pays better than his own music would (who wants to hear it anyway?), so there you have it.

I can see both sides of it... Just don't expect it to be 1973. It's a fun way to hear Frank's music, and have a good time, if that's what you want. I would love to see something more like the 88 tour, with a lot of brass arrangements, and Keneally as musical director(which will never happen).

I thought you were one of those who are happy with him just playing his father's music.

You can't have it all, I guess.

Don't think there's much chance of that at the moment....... You may get some other type of Americans coming if you're really unlucky..

As for ZPZ, yeah, the scripted 40-year-old jokes are a mistake, but as others have said it IS a chance to see Frank's rock music performed in a live setting, and can be enjoyable if you lower expectations and don't expect it to be Frank/Frank's band/1973 etc. (remember, these are hard songs to play, and Dweezil hasn't got Frank's band or his personality)
I've enjoyed most of the gigs I've seen and the 2013 'plays Roxy' was the best. I don't listen to recordings though, it has to be live.

FOB. Smile (think we're up to about 12 cents now)

Dweezil certainly needs to loosen up and put some eyebrows on it.

The most important thing is if it is not profitable and would not be surprised if Gail has not to support it financially in some way(s). Which then hurts her cash flow to get FZ items to market.

I understand the op viewpoint and respect it but for me, I never had a realistic opportunity to see FZ, so hearing Frank's music played live and played so very well is a treat. It's not Frank noone thinks it is but I'm glad DZ is continuing to tour ZPZ.

I attended ZPZ shows in Fort Lauderdale (2010), Utrecht (2012) and Roxy in Amsterdam (2013).
Always enjoyed and never expected to be Frank (I guess it's pretty obvious).

I think that ZPZ as the Zappateers and any other initiative which brings Frank's music to the masses is worth being supported.

They are pro, the music is well rehearsed and the band is tight; some tracks were rarely or never performed by Frank live and it's interesting to listen to them.

A couple of Dweezil's solos in the Roxy show were killer !!
And also Sheila blowing her sax is not a very common listening nowadays.

Closer to 20 cents ??

UM

Seen them every tour and have been very happy to have heard the music live. Agreed - its a different thing without Frank - but the experience is so much better than almost everything else out there. Few exceptions pop up like a live gig from King Crimson - Cheer Accident - etc... I dont really listen to any ZPZ outside of the live in person enviro though.
