I found this article and ad dated on June 13, 1957 ( the ad is repeated on June 20, 1957) where I think the Blackouts opened for Earl Bostic Orchestra at the Shrine Exposition Hall on June 22, 1957. Other artists included were: Red Nichols and his Five Pennies, the Velvetones, Little Richard & The Platters.

Following the chapter 1957-1958 the Blackouts:

What about Louis Armstrong? Or Ruby Dandridge & The Titans? Both were mentioned on The Lost Episodes and in Drumbo's book. Red Nichols, Little Richard, and The Platters weren't.

Did you check the line-up of the Eighth Annual Festival Of Stars?

Or maybe you should check the sixth, if the Lost Episodes track was recorded at the seventh (with Bostic, Velvetones, and Blackouts) and they were talking about the sixth (with Armstrong, Titans, and Velvetones).

The Lost Episodes booklet suggests that Bostic and Armstrong performed at the same event. But, unlike the Blackouts, Louis Armstrong doesn't seem like the sort of act you'd omit from advance publicity.

Just a line but enough to confirm The Blackouts, Velvetones, Earl Bostic & Sachtmo Orchestra too in the same program... Smile

Feel free to have a look at the California Eagle newspaper archives.

Indeed. Perhaps Armstrong's career was in a pre-Hello Dolly slump in 1957.

The fact that The Blackouts are not mentioned is not surprising.

Thanks.

Its probably that even more bands played on this day ( such us the Titans...) and they were not added in the "official program"...

Louis Armstrong is present with big ads in this year 1957 for different concerts ( i.e. with Duke Ellington in NYC)...on the Californian Eagle Newspaper ...perhaps there was no time to re-arrange new ads ( two days before the concert) at the time of new editions and he could be confirmed at the very last time.

I see that was issued once a week every Thursday.
There is a gap of a week, between June 20 to 27, 1957 for the next issue of the California Eagle Newspaper.

I found also this article where mentions the DJs to appear at the festival...and the next one mentions to Joe Adams...

At least three of them are on the Freak Out! list.

Well, when I woke up this morning and logged on to zappateers I certainly didn't expect to read that phrase.......
