1980 UMRK YAWYI Outtakes (Labeled "YAWYI Rehearsal")

Previously seeded by pbuzby
http://www.zappateers.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=8196

But here, there is a little bit more.

14:45, B

lineage:
Hoosac92 (??gen) Maxell XLII tapes > Pioneer CtW 504R > Avance AC97soundcard
> CoolEdit retracking, level adjustments & speed corrected > flac frontend level 7

(The sound is lower, but different, even if it's the same source)

Track list: (with details of track 1, 2 & 3 from previous Pbuzby seed

01 Fine Girl (w/Doreen outro and Easy Meat intro, includes drum intro and more Bob Harris over the coda rather than the chorale)
02 Teenage Wind (w/FZ, Ike and Ray vocals, no Bob Harris or Steve Vai)
03 Drafted Again (w/FZ vocals, no Ahmet or Moon, long ending)

04 Fine Girl (just a few seconds, Bass/Drums) 9sec of silence (tape noise) cut at end.
05 Drafted Again (near the YAWYI version but some differences here and there)

Some details of difference between track 05 Drafted Again and officiel "YAWYI" version:

--->30 sec more, in fact, 3X "Aiieeeeeeeee . . . shot in the fox hole" more

-"Oh, NO" get a high voice less"

-"LaCelia Jackson! Come on down!
Nancy Butterworth! Come on down!
You're the next contestants on SOOOOO WHAT!
And, but, also . . .
A new car!
But that's not all . . . " not present here

""Aiieeeeeeeee . . . shot in the fox hole" parts are a little bit different, some guitar part not in YAWYI, but some "horn" keyboards sound not present here

Speed remarks:
This seed was "speed adjusted" with A440 (thanks to Flambay !!!!)

But, if you compare with official Album
(to see differences in "Drafted Again" with YAWYI, by exemple)
you will discover a difference in speed, (or pitch)

So, YAWYI official album is not in tune with A440, a little bit faster (or higher in tune, or ...--->my aproximative english !!)

After the sample process, we decided to let it in (A440) tune
(We don't know (yet) why FZ decided to make that ??)

------------------------------------------------------------------
My view of some speed in some officials songs presents here.

-for me !! :
(flambay will perhaps update this text later !!)

Fine girl is ~~25cts too fast in "Tinseltown Rebelion" (Rykodisc RCD 10532)
Teenage wind is ~~55cts too fast in "YAWYI" (Rykodisc RCD 10536)
Drafted Again is ~~30cts too fast in "YAWYI" (Rykodisc RCD 10536)

i've read where folks with perfect pitch tend
to hear things a little sharp as they get older ......

maybe FZ was within that spectrum when he did
some of the recordings from around this time .....

just an idea ......

Except he didn't have perfect pitch, he hired Vai for that. Looking at all the flaws and mistakes in the remastering of the catalog, one must mostly blame the engineers, but Frank too. Sometimes I think Frank wore too many hats, not that he couldn't, but that he shouldn't. To concentrate on what you're best at. OK, y0u can do it all, but give yourself a break. Bottom line for me though is the hired engineers should have spotted the errors and such, and this is probably one of them.
Like "Frank, do you want that left channel to cancel out?" Frank often mentioned when making vinyl, errors like this can happen. it seems ironic that the digital age is where Frank had problems. He mastered vinyl like no other. He did all he could to make it sound good, and he did!!! So much so, they still sound better over the digital versions.

Thanks Drew .
I never could quite find sourced info @ Frank & perfect pitch , only mentions of his name listed along
with others whose pitch abilities were an open and confirmed element of discussion . I knew Vai has it and hence
his transcribing ability would be that much more elevated ( perfect rhythm ? ......is there such a thing , too ? ) .
Hearing and reading Dweezil's recent Zappa Plays Zappa comments about Frank composing on planes and "hearing
all the parts" pricked up my interest again . I also "hear" what you're saying about wearing too many hats and the attendant errors that can accrue and situationalize themselves in & around things .......

thanks for sharing , and if there's more around any of this , i look forward to it .

Randolph

Thanks for this.

Tracks 2 (Teenage Wind) & 3 (Drafted Again) sound a lot like the versions found on the Mystery Box (tracks 0808 & 0806) only lesser quality here. The other tracks are mixes I've never heard before.
