Largo: Do you know a lot about guns, Mr. Bond?
Bond: No, but I know a little about women.

I heard this years ago. At the time, I thought it was Frank. Now I'm not so sure. Sounds like a MIDI to me. *EXCEPT* for the bongos. Those sound live.

As someone else pointed out, ADATs have pitch control.
I have one and still use it, since I don't have ProTools...
Maybe someday

Not bongos - more like a derbak or darbuka. Still, sounds like it's also sequenced.

After trying to adjust this tune to different keys, I must say it sounds even nicer when corrected down (-70cts to the key of Bb, or even -170cts to the A key),
rather than +30cts up (= B key).

i am not very into technical questions but about DAT tape i remember one time ago someone played a 44000khz recording back with 48000 (or was it the opposite) and had the speed changed.

I think larve may have hit the nail on the head (over 3 years ago!). I just made a little experiment of resetting the sample rate to 48 kHz without resampling, and this makes the first note (originally somewhere between F and F#) fall neatly in G without any pitch correction needed. On the other hand, this makes the derbak/darbuka sound less "natural" to my ears, but that could be due to a loss of bottom end caused by the alterations in the sample rate.

Just speculating, of course - it could be just a coincidence, but I found it quite surprising that it should sound so perfectly "in tune" just by resetting the sampling rate... any opinions? You can all try this at home, of course.

As for whether or not this is actually by FZ, I think it's somewhat silly to take a guess without a detailed structural analysis of the piece, for which we'd need a score. I don't have the time for this, but if there's anyone out there willing and able to make a transcription, I could definitely help with the analysis.

Thanks, I listen to it and I know it is Zappa. Even the outlier nature of it points to the pioneering and exploratory sense of the composer.

Thanks a lot for sharing it here, where it belongs.

That's interesting, but a post by the Vaultmeister himself clearing this up would be appreciated - just so we don't have to rely on stuff that someone claimed having overheard someone else say...

In this thread calvin2hikers hints at having emailed Joe and learning that this track isn't FZ, but that's all.

Frank or not Frank. To my ears the whole piece in this form sounds wrong in its overtones. If you do it precisely like >yetanother< posted on 2012-02-27 and play it at 48 kHz, it doesn't sound clumsy anymore, the tempo makes much more sense and everything seems natural to me. Thank you anyway.
