Frank Zappa/The Mothers of Invention
Possible Building Reel
1969
This version: 21.08 min, A
Setlist:
01 "Hamburgers Make Me Sleepy" [00:31]
02 Passalaglia [03:07]
03 The Dick Kunc Story [01:21]
04 Randomonium [01:27]
05 My Head [01:54]
06 German Lunch [08:43]
07 My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama [04:05]
This is actually a reconstruction I made. Since it has been approved and since some of the material here is unheard elsewhere here it is. The story goes like this: Drew obtained a bit of a building reel from the Steve Hecht tapes containing "Hamburgers Make Me Sleepy", "Passalaglia" (or "Passacaglia") abruptly cut at 40 seconds, "Randomonium", "My Head" and the first three seconds of "German Lunch". So at first, I included the complete "Passalaglia" from the Artisan acetate seed and the complete "German Lunch" from the "My Name is Fritz" seed. Then I noticed that, at the end of the longer version "German Lunch", the first chords of "My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama" were audible, so I spliced in the extended version from the seed, just for my pure enjoyment.
After I did listen back to the complete results it all sounded very familiar. And indeed it was, it reminded me of a description Lowell George did in an interview from "Zig Zag magazine" in 1975, reprinted in Billy James' excellent book "Necessity is": "I'm also on the 12-album set that Frank planned to release. I think I have half a side. I do a border guard routine. I'm a German border guard interviewing people as they cross the border. And I think I play one long realtively lame guitar solo, almost half a side. One of these days Frank will put that thing out"
I think George may have had some things mixed, but it seems like he's describing what is going on here, even if what occupes half a side is not the lame guitar solo (probably "Passacaglia"), but "German Lunch". I also realized "The Dick Kunc Story" and "My Head" are longer edits unheard before.

I think Lowell's "lame guitar solo" is the one heard on the "Columbia Test Pressing." The "half a side" comment puzzled me too, but looking at it again, it's possible that he meant that "German Lunch" combined with the solo made up half a side. (I believe Lowell also was prone to exaggeration now and then.)

Well, we all know how much Frank liked to edit back and forth, so it's possible that there was another building reel with both the Columbia solo and "German Lunch", unless George had two separate reels and confused them

Well two of the build reels we have share identical material so it's likely that Frank was constantly shuffling everything around. It isn't unlikely that the LG solo and "German Lunch" at one point appeared on an LP side together.
