Bought "Freak Out" from a Italian mail order place in 1982. MOI vinyl was super hard to get then in Liverpool.

Bought "Mothermania" 2nd hand from a local record shop soon after.

Never looked back.

I had been given Apostrophe, and "sort of" liked it.
I went and bought You Are What You Is on vinyl when it was first released, and was hooked from that moment on...

I had an amazing a level physics teacher .(Bev Smith -are you out there????)
One day he asked me if I had a decent record player.
I said I did.
He handed me a carrier bag and said "You play bass-you'll like this!" and in the bag were all the MOI albums on vinyl.
He said I could only borrow them for the weekend.
So I took them home ,and put on Freak Out.
My life changed. The universe shifted on it's axis.
I spent the entire weekend listening to all of them and never looked back.
The only 'problem' ,if you can call it that ,was that I suddenly didn't care about listening to anything else. But so what.
So ,even though I didn't end up doing very well with physics ,I got the best influence of my musical life from taking it!

I had a good (but odd) introduction to Zappa's incredible music. I had a friend in the early 80's( whom I used to chat to on the CB) who talked incessantly about Frank Zappa. At first I thought he was making it up (he was a bit crazy, to say the least!) and he declared one of the CB channels "Channel Zappa" and held a rubber band over the CB's mike and left his music to play.

Needless to say, this intrigued me and he gave me two compilation tapes of Zappa stuff which was diverse but I loved it all. There were tracks from JABFL, SY, WOIIFTM, ZA, YAWYS, FO, ZINY, Apostrophe, RAE... a real diverse bunch and there were no song titles or anything written down.

I was young at the time and did a paper round and these tapes were on my walkman every day and infected my brain cells until there was no turning back. Zappa vinyl was hard to find, but from some ads in Record Collector, I managed to obtain HR, SY and WOIIFTM, then I found TTR in the import rack of a local record shop and then 200 Motels in the soundtrack section of another shop. Everytime I saw anything Zappa in a second-hand record shop, I had to have it. I t became a quest!

I was a staunch lover of vinyl and when CD arrived, I intended to stay true to the traditional format. That was until FO, HR, CWRATJ and UM came out on CD, along with DHBIM and I succumbed! Freak Out was, in fact, the first ever CD I owned (and still have!). After that I bought every release that came out during the 80's and 90's, but it was those tapes that hooked me.

Don't worry- I had 2 other physics teachers on that course as well and they more than made up for it with the hard times! (wouldn't be physics if you enjoyed it would it?!)

but Mr Smith was special. 1st ever lesson we had with him he said "No one knows what an electron actually is.we know what it does ,but not what it is."-zen and the art of particle analysis....
