Completist’s Helper: FZ & FZ-Related Samplers, Promos & Flexi-Discs

Completely Revised, December 2008

Here is a listing of variant FZ tracks found on samplers, promos and flexi-discs.

Please note that Mothermania is found not here, but rather where it properly belongs: in the heart of the core LP & CD catalogue.

Where Credit Is Due Dept.:

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: The Helper would not be half as accurate and complete without the active assistance, specialized knowledge and astonishing collection of BengoFury.

1969:
The 1969 Warner-Reprise Songbook
(Warner Brothers promo LP)

Probably not necessary for completists:
The Voice Of Cheese / Louie Louie / Our Bizarre Relationship / The Air
Montage of FZ cuts with no new material, probably assembled without FZ’s approval
The Voice Of Cheese and Our Bizarre Relationship are redacted edits

*

1972:
Rock Para Mis Amigos, Vol. 3: Los Pesados, Por Supuesto
(Argentina-only Reprise / Music Hall LP)

Probably not necessary for completists:
Eat That Question
Unique 2:09 edit and Type B mono reduction mix found only on this LP, probably created without FZ’s approval

*

1972:
Music Hall 217
(Argentina-only Reprise / Music Hall promo 7”)

Probably not necessary for completists:
Waka / Jawaka
Unique 4:56 edit found only on this promo, probably created without FZ’s approval

*

April 11, 1975:
Rock Flashbacks: Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention
(a.k.a. Transparency)

(Verve sampler LP)

Of special interest to completists:
Excerpt From Lumpy Gravy
Unique redacted edit of material from Lumpy Gravy Part 1
Probably not necessary for completists:
This LP has very long sides, and the resultant audio quality is slightly compressed
Concentration Moon (Censored stereo edit with partially censored “Velvet Underground” line)
Who Needs The Peace Corps? (Censored stereo edit)
These edits are also found on original UK and German pressings and later US pressings of the original stereo We’re Only In It For The Money LP — a.k.a. the ‘heavily censored version’ — in slightly superior sound quality

*

1976:
The Rock Generation
(Two EvaTone 8" flexi-discs bundled with the book The Rock Generation)

Of special interest to completists:
Disc 1 includes a unique interview clip:
Frank Zappa: Decorating Time

*

May 1991:
Special Clean Cuts Edition — Tinsel Town Rebellion
(Barking Pumpkin promo mini-LP)

All tracks end on a fadeout
Of special interest to completists:
Tinsel Town Rebellion
Censored, probably with FZ’s approval
Brown Shoes Don’t Make It
Slightly extended audience fadeout

*

September 1983:
Special Clean Cuts Edition — You Are What You Is
(Barking Pumpkin promo LP)

All tracks end on a fadeout
Of special interest to completists:
Harder Than Your Husband
Unique cold intro with no organ flourish, extended chorus outro and fadeout
Mudd Club
Unique 'snork' intro and unique looped outro
Dumb All Over
Unique 'snork' intro and early fadeout

(Author’s Note: Oddly, unlike the censored UK CBS promo 7” of You Are What You Is, there’s nothing ‘clean' about this promo — Harder Than Your Husband and You Are What You Is both contain their original naughtiness, fully uncensored.)

*

1983:
Barking Pumpkin Goes Digital
(Barking Pumpkin promo 45rpm maxi-single)

This three-track sampler is vital to completists:
The Man From Utopia Meets Mary Lou
Alternate digital remix with added reverb and a unique cold ending
Cocaine Decisions
Alternate digital remix of the original LP edit with added reverb
Mo ‘N Herb’s Vacation (Third Movement)
Original LP mix with lots of digital reverb — The low number of grooves on this 45rpm 12" record present this familiar LSO Vol. 1 LP track in best-ever sound quality

*

The Perfect Stranger [promo maxi-single]
(Barking Pumpkin promo 33rpm maxi-single, 1984)

Of special interest to completists:
The Girl In The Magnesium Dress
Outside Now, Again

The low number of grooves on this 33rpm 12" record present these familiar EMI Angel Boulez Conducts Zappa tracks in best-ever sound quality

*

April 1985:
The Old Masters Box 1 Sampler
(Barking Pumpkin sampler LP)

Of special interest to completists:
Lumpy Gravy (Excerpt) (also known as the Barrow-Wackerman Remix)
Unique redacted edit with new bass and drum overdubs, available only on this compilation
(The entire Barrow-Wackerman Remix will almost certainly be released on the impending Lumpy Money 3CD set)

*

November 1986:
The Old Masters Box 2 Sampler
(Barking Pumpkin sampler LP)

Probably not necessary for completists:
Mr. Green Genes
This digital remaster of the original LP mix was long regarded as essential for completists — but it’s also found on the Old Masters Box 2 Uncle Meat LP

*

January 1987:
Sharleena
(EvaTone 8" flexi-disc bundled with Guitar Player magazine, Vol. 21 #1)

Of special interest to completists:
Redacted edit of the track later issued on You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Volume 3

*

February 1987:
Keyboard Magzine Soundpage #29
(EvaTone 8" flexi-disc bundled with Keyboard magazine, Vol. 13 #2)

Of special interest to completists:
Features a unique Synclavier track found only on this flexi-disc:
Black Page No. 1

*

June 1987:
The Guitar World According To Frank Zappa
(Barking Pumpkin cassette)

Of special interest to completists:
Excerpt From "Revised Music for Guitar and Low-Budget Orchestra” (a.k.a. the Barrow-Wackerman Remix)
Unique redacted edit with new bass and drum overdubs, available only on this compilation
A Solo From Cologne
Variant extended edit of But Who Was Fulcanelli?
A Solo From Atlanta

Variant extended edit of For Duane
Things That Look Like Meat

Variant redacted edit
Probably not necessary for completists:
A Solo From Heidelberg
Re-issued as Heidelberg on One Shot Deal

*

April 26, 1988:
You Can’t Do That On Stage Anymore Sampler
(Zappa Records sampler LP)

Of special interest to completists:
Dickie’s Such An Asshole
The YCDTOSA 3 CD adds a 2:12 intro and a 1:25 outro to this edit — From 5:33 to 5:53 (Sampler) / 7:44 to 7:49 (YCDTOSA 3), different takes with different lyrics are used
Cosmik Debris
From 4:18 to the end, the Sampler LP and YCDTOSA 3 use different takes with different spoken words

*

May 21, 1991:
Dr. Demento’s 20th Anniversary Collection
(Rhino CD)

Probably not necessary for completists:
Dancin’ Fool
(Probably derived from the same master as the 1990 and 1995 Ryko CDs of Sheik Yerbouti, but lacking the ‘bad batch’ mastering problems that plague the Ryko titles. This meant that the Demento CD was once a must for completists; however, it was rendered obsolete by the August 21, 1995 issue of Strictly Commercial, which also features the corrected master.)

*

1991:
FZ25-Zappaween
(Japan-only Ryko 3” promo CDS)

Probably not necessary for completists:
Porn Wars
Early fadeout of the original track, almost certainly edited without FZ’s approval

*

April 1994:
The Compact Sonora 4-94
(Italy-only CD bundled with Sonora magazine, #4/94)

Of special interest to completists:
Includes two unique FZ interview clips:
Frank Zappa Speaks - Serious Music Lecture
Frank Zappa: A Last Word Or Two

*

August 1995:
Kill Ugly Radio
(Ryko promo CD)

Of special interest to completists:
Includes seven unique FZ interview clips:
As A Matter Of Fact...
Just Imagine...
It Has Just Been Passed...
You Can Get A Point Across...
Yeah, Well...
The Guy On The Staten Island Ferry...
Radio Has Helped To...

*

August 1995:
Kill Ugly Radio Some More
(Ryko promo CD)

Of special interest to completists:
Includes seven unique FZ interview clips:
It's OK To Be Smart...
Obscenity Is A Legal Term...
Once Upon A Time...
I Think The First Thing That I Did...
I Go Out There And Give 'Em Everything That I Can...
The Horrible Part Of It Is...
You Have Any Last Words...

I don't hear Barrow overdubs in "Low-Budget Orchestra," only Wackerman (I don't hear Chester at all,) and FZ only mentions Chad in the liner notes.

"Down in de Dew" appears WITHOUT the tape damage apparent on Lather (especially audible right at the beginning.) Very Happy

Needs updating and was this included in Lumpy Money? (my copy is stashed away for moving, even if not, not sure it would say? So many versions of each release, it is very confusing to say the least.

Is the excerpt on Old Masters the same one FZ included in the Speaking Of Music broadcast? If so, that particular edit isn't on Lumpy Money, but almost all of the elements are. The exception is the "this is phase three"/"well, get through phase one and two first" exchange, which wasn't in any version of Lumpy Gravy but opens CPIII.
