The versions on the tracker are from bburnett's collection. He lists them as being from the master cassettes that he bought from Dick Barber, but they are missing sections of shows so they can't be the genuine masters.

Which ones are missing sections of shows?

bburnett's version of Harrisburg runs out during Camarillo Brillo and is missing Trouble Every Day completely. The version on the tracker has jaypfunk's copy of these tracks. Also bburnett's Rochester only has the final section, missing the Village of the Sun sequence. And the section of Pittsburgh which always came at the start of the 'Rochester' soundboard is much, much better quality than bburnett's Pittsburgh 'master'.

Maybe some of the traders from way back might remember if there was another, older, source of these tapes. I have a memory of ninja saying somewhere that they were originally sourced from Brian the monitor mixer, not Dick Barber.

Don't get me wrong, I am enormously grateful to bburnett for sharing his versions of the shows. I just wouldn't want everyone to assume that as these were masters, there was no point in keeping on looking for better versions.

Thats not what Burnett told me. But it was a long time ago, and I could be wrong. He mentions having some on DAT etc.

He mentions using DAT transfers for some cassettes when he couldn't find the originals. But there's a picture of an original cassette on this thread:

Note that it's a BASF Chromdioxid Super II, and they weren't manufactured until the 1980s. (Here's a link to an article from April 1981 about the new Chromdioxid tapes.)

But, Drew, you've been trading for a long time, and if you don't know of an alternative source for these tapes, then there probably isn't one.

I do know of alternatives, but most are inferior. I will ask and check again, it can't hurt to ask around. The guy I got most of my copies from has passed away. Most of mine sound a gen or two higher then this one. But I do know a lot of collectors and will ask about these tapes.

I applaud your efforts to present the most complete recordings of all these shows. I know it is a very time-consuming and otherwise difficult task. You are amazing people, indeed.
