Look at this link:

http://globalia.net/donlope/fz/videography/1970-75.html#Unknown1973

My theory is that the video comes from:

Quote:
1973 09 02 - Mehrzweckhalle Wetzikon, Zürich, Switzerland
125 min, Aud, B+/B

soundcheck intro, Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue, Kung Fu, Penguin In Bondage, Dog Meat, RDNZL, Inca Roads, Cosmik Debris, improvisations, Montana, improvisations, Dupree's Paradise (q: Echidna's Arf), Brown Shoes Don't Make It, Join The March And Eat My Starch, Farther Oblivion (q: Sweet Leilani)

Well, my theory got started when I read this quote drdork post:

Quote:
Strictly speaking, Join The March And Eat My Starch is the end of St. Alfonzo's Pancake Breakfast (in the broad sense), not the beginning of Farther Oblivion.

In 1973, Farther Oblivion started with Steno Pool, just as it had in 1972.

8/21/73 Stockholm [thirty-five years ago today!] and 9/2/73 Zurich are the only circulating recordings on which the Mothers performed JTMAEMS and Farther Oblivion without the rest of the Yellow Snow suite. Both times, you can hear FZ giving the band special instructions--because this wasn't just Farther Oblivion.

Well, I saw the video on YouTube and Zappa says the words "Join The March And Eat My Starch" which launches the band into the tune. Well, IINK says the footage is from the European part of the tour. If that is true, it would have to be Zurich because the Yellow Snow Suite wasn't performed live on that part of the tour and we already know what the Stockholm footage looks like.

Does anybody agree with me?

Could be possible. I have not compared the video to the Zurich tape to see if it is a match. The other possibilities could be:

8/19 Gothenburg
8/23 Helsinki
9/06 Cologne
9/09 Amsterdam

All confirmed shows that we have no tapes of.

I compared the Europe '73 video in the Australian interview to the audience recording of 9/2/73 Zurich. The fills in Penguin In Bondage don't seem to match. Most obviously, FZ plays a guitar fill after "when the battery fail" on the video, but not on the Zurich tape.

So it must be from a show we don't have. Which makes at least three European shows where they played JTMAEMS + Farther Oblivion.

Where did the Australian TV crew get this footage? I suspect it came from FZ himself. Which means that it should be in the vault, at least partially edited by FZ. (Note that it edits abruptly from Penguin to Join The March And Eat My Starch, and that the two snippets inserted into the interview are not divided at the right point.)

In the original post there's a link to Román's videography, where there is a link to YouTube. Unfortunately, "This video has been removed by the user."

Well, almost. They missed and put it just before the end of Penguin In Bondage.

According to Román's website, the footage was also shown on Italian television. Does anyone have that version? Is it similarly edited? Australian interview dubbed into Italian?

I got it. Yes, it´s the same edition. The Australian one has the interview between both cut themes.

The Italian has no interview in the middle but has the same cut edited between both themes.

Afterwards appears an Italian host talking about the character of FZ, but no reference about the footage shown.

I have the impression this footage is shot in a studio tv. The camera techniche is rather a Zappaian one with those types of zooms.

Perhaps was summer season according to band clothes.

It must have been the August-September '73 European tour.

1. Penguin In Bondage was not performed until August 1973.
2. Sal Marquez is nowhere to be seen.
3. Ian Underwood is playing bass clarinet.
4. Everyone is wearing short sleeves. June-July is winter in Australia.

I found a little difference between both. The Italian video has a close up of Ralf Humphrey whistling duck the intro of Penguin In Bondage that can be heard in the Australian one but not seen.

I'd say it's Verona 1973. The channel is "Canale Veneto" and Verona is in Veneto, so...

cheers

I don't think there is a guitar solo in any Penguin until the UK shows. So I would guess the video is from the UK.

EDIT: I misunderstood Dr Dork's comment. There isn't a guitar solo!

Have you find some clue if FZ & Mothers performed in Verona ´73?

I found this ad for Bologna & Rome:

http://www.afka.net/images/Mags-pic/fz%20mag%20ciao2001%2073c.jpg

and here both are mentioned & afterwards the review for Rome:

http://www.afka.net/images/Mags-scan/super%20sound%2073a.jpg
http://www.afka.net/images/Mags-scan/super%20sound%2073b.jpg
but no other city.

Btw: There is a new that appeared in La Stampa on Sept. 14, 1973 ( dated in Frankfurt ) that confirmed that the concert in Genova ( for next Thursday - so would be Sept. 20, 1973 - was canceled.

FZ> having missed a few "dates" during the "tour" in Germany, in Europe could not hold his musicians inactive for over a week.
